Ok, so about a month ago, my jailbroken iphone 3Gs said "no sim installed" when there clearly was. it had done this occasionally ever since i got it almost 2 years ago, even before i jailbroke it (yes i should have returned it but i was stupid and didnt. now i regret it). Usually when it would do this, i would reboot and it would be fine. this time when i tried to reboot, it turned off and it has not come on since. i have tried EVERYTHING and have not been able to recover it. i've tried TinyUmbrella, redsn0w and iREB and nothing has worked. please help :(

Well it is not stuck in DFU mode since a simple reboot is all that is needed to exit DFU mode.

Have you tested the sim in another phone ?

Have you tried to restore the phone to current firmware ? Then check the sim while the phone is stock.

no i did not

yes the sim works in another phone

and yes i tried restoring to current firmware. I kept getting errors. the most consistent error was 21. i also remember getting 3194 and 1602 and there were others as well. when i plug it in and open redsnow or tiny umbrella it says the phone is in dfu mode. its very puzzling

3194 means your host file is not pointed to Apple (required to restore to current firmware)
1600 errors can mean you did not get the phone in pwnedDFU mode using Redsn0w

Go to iClarified.com for a tutorial.

i'm currently using my girlfriends old 3gs. But i really want mine back. This is her old one for a reason. It's been dropped about 30 times too many and is a POS and mine has been babied and is like new, just doesn't work.

----------

i fixed the hosts file and got rid of 3194 and i'll try restoring while in pwned dfu mode and let you know

pwned dfu mode made it not even attempt to recover, even with a custom firmware ._. it said the firmware was not compatible even though it definitely was

----------

i tried restoring one more time just for the heck of it while not in pwned dfu mode and got error 21 again ._.

from the iphone wiki:

Error 21
Custom firmware restore fail (PwnageTool since 4.1). You have to put your device into the DFU mode and not into recovery mode. Device won't boot correctly an stuck at the Apple logo after the error. Press and hold power and home button until it reboots.
Error when using Sauriks server for a restore with iOS 5.x in the recovery mode at least on a A5 device.
This error can also happen when you try to restore an iPod with hardware dfu. Use iREB r5 to solve this.
You are trying to update to a beta firmware without UDID activation.

Basically 21 means the phone is not in DFU-mode (black screen showing nothing)

pwned dfu mode made it not even attempt to recover, even with a custom firmware ._. it said the firmware was not compatible even though it definitely was

Then you haven't correctly fixed the host issue. iTunes cannot authenticate the firmware restore until you fix the host issue.

Regardless of what other error the phone throws, the firmware restore will never take until you fix the host issue.

Type "gs.apple.com" into your browser, it must take you to an Apple error page or it is not set correctly.

But it has to be in DFU mode. it's definitely not recovery mode because the screen is blank. error 21 comes up without restoring to custom firmware.

and i typed gs.apple.com into the browser and it did take me to an apple page. now you see my confusion ._.

Hmmmmm new idea. would it be possible to take the motherboard out of the one im currently using which is 16 gig and just put it in my non working 8 gig one?? the 16 gig was not jailbroken

Fixed!!!!!!

Ok swapping motherboards worked!!!! :D Thanks for your help any way. its greatly appreciated that you tried!
