Student Discount and RAM Question

As far as I know the student discount for a 27" iMac is $100 off. However I've heard that if you place an order through your particular school/universities network you can get a greater discount? I'm just wondering if there is any truth to that?

As for the RAM, if I were to purchase the high end 27" iMac and kept the Memory stock (4GB, 2 sticks of 2GB), could I go onto say crucial and buy a 4GB kit (2 sticks of 2GB) and just add that to the empty slots for a total of 8GB (4 sticks of 2GB)?

Nope, Apple's education discount is an even 10% no matter what. The tech store on my university even has the iMacs for sale, but they're the same price of what apple's store offers with education discount.

Yes, you can add another 4gb of ram from another company easily, just make sure its cas latency is 7.

What I meant was the discount isn't that much.

Apart from the base model ($50 discount) all other iMacs are discounted by $100 for students, not 10%, so the i5 is more like 5% discount

Just buy a compatible version and install it yourself.

Ah I see what you mean. I think TMRaven meant to say $100 not 10%. Just a little glitch I'm sure

It's annoying because in England (and possibly other countries) you do get 10% discount which works out a lot better.
