I noticed Apple offers discounts to students.

I plan on going back into education this September 2011, into College..

My problem is I was going to buy a new iMac this week, I need a new computer asap.
So what do I do? Am I able to get a student discount now, or do I have to wait until I'm in college.. or should I just go without the discount?

What do I need to qualify for a student discount? I do not have an up to date student ID as I have been out of education for the whole of 2010, I am sure my ID would have run out in late 2009. So complicated :confused:

Should I bother? What do I do..

You can use an old id. A coworker of mine used his student ID from 15 years ago about about 70 pounds lighter in the picture and they accepted it at the retail store. Well they didn't really even look at it, just said no problem after a quick glance.

at the Apple Store?

Well I don't want to take that chance.. they might not just "glance" at it or "not really look at it" in my case..

Yes, apple store.

You have nothing to lose by trying.

I suppose.. but I'd have to go in there acting like my ID was not out of date and then they might spot, oh this ended in 2010!? You're not a student right now then!

Then they'll think I was trying to pull a smart one and it will be humiliating going back there when I have my new student card or simply having to pay full price, won't it? :\

nah, don't worry about it. If they ask to see it, show it, if they say it's too old you can say you'll be going back in the fall. They may very well accept it.

are u serious? just take the darn id to the store and try , humiliating ? sheesh :D:rolleyes:

its a 100 bucks off so its worth it.

Arent u gonna wait till may 20 to get that free ipod touch with an imac purchase?

Does nobody have a sense of ethics around here anymore?

If you aren't a student, then you aren't eligible for a student discount.

Give Apple a call, and see if they can extend the discount to you early. They may ask for a copy of an admissions letter or something similar to verify that you will indeed be a student again in the fall.

Right.. very well. Well I am going to have a search for my old ID then.. I know it's some where.

Btw.. Can I get the high end models in the Apple Store i.e. SSD + 1T HDD or are they only available online?

Because if they are only available online how do I apply for a student discount if my ID is old  I am pretty sure I need to be in school as I need to give school info etc, info that I don't currently have until I'm in school in september?

Lol there is no way I am applying for a student discount with the chances of someone thinking I am not eligible.. I want to be able to apply legitimately without the embarrassment, I just don't want to wait until september. I have work and a portfolio to fill!

I didn't know anything about a free iPod touch.. really? I really can't be bothered with waiting any longer just for that.. but I suppose I could give it to my little sister

Alaerian, when am I classified as a student? When I start actively/physically going into class in september? Or when I enroll this summer? Or just through the fact I plan on taking my next course?

I think I'll give :apple: a call in the morning, I will probably get more answers there! Although the people on the end of those lines aren't always right neither the most helpful.

The people there don't really care

They just took one look at my school id and that was it. I would wait until the end of May because you get a free Ipod Touch and a discounted printer(might have been free too). If anything just order it online at the student apple page, and i'm pretty sure all you have to do there is put the name of school you're going to.

You can order online with no idea or school info aside from the name of the school you attend. They may audit you later and request additional info.

They probably do care, and they probably will take more of a look! My local Apple Store is in Cambridge, the Grande Arcade. Cambridge is full of Uni students, uni students and more uni students and I am pretty sure most of the staff are students there too!

If I do the discount online I need to be at school currently, because however Apple uses the information they obviously need to make calls or whatever to confirm that <insert my name here> I am attending this school or am going to attend.. but I am not yet enrolled.:confused:

Once you have registered and paid for classes

Bring that registration proof <an email with school info, a letter with the school letter head etc.> to an apple store and politely ask if you can use the student id now.

Depending on the manager, you may be able to purchase it in the Summer at an Apple store. I had the manager write a written okay after I showed him the registration pdf from UCLA's online school on my iPhone a couple of months ago. And I registered for that class about 7 weeks early.

So you may want to wait until you physically register for classes (and therefore hopefully qualify for the free iPod etc.) IF you are gung-ho about getting the iMac from an Apple store.

Regarding the phone # and online ordering, I always use my work phone # since I get most Apple product shipped to the job.

I went into a store and told them what college that i went to, and they did not ask for an id of anykind. All that they need is the zip code, and they can look that up at the store

Argh!

I hate it when I can't find something when I need.. and I've seen it lying about somewhere

So I found my very old student ID.. It says 2007/08 on it lol!

I can't find my recent 2009/10 one though.

I will be enrolling and paying for college on 11th June 2011.

I am going to need the computer before then though.. so what options do I have?

I was considering getting my brother to do it but then he won't be able to get a student discount if I use his up.. even though he doesn't desperately need anything from the Apple store right now and I do plus he is a PC and Xbox FREAK.. :p

What happens if my brother buys my iMac for me.. will it be registered to him..? I am not going to be living at home forever.. what happens if I take my iMac in for repair or call up customer services and I am a girl.. Or does it not matter, it's just a matter of buying it.. no licensing, registering names and all that stuff? Including my CS5 Premium Design Package, doesn't that get registered and all sorts of stuff!?:confused:

That's the only way I see this going to work.. unless I get some girl I know to do it for me.. but it would be easier if my brother did it

I suppose this answers my question about the Student Discount :) https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/584036/
I will get my brother to do it for me.

How do I go about the my Adobe CS5 Design Premium Extended package though.. I think that is specific licensing, isn't it? If it is it would mean a lot to me to be assigned to my purchased software legitimately.. I plan on using this for my portfolio and freelancing from it commercially. This needs to be LEGAL. Should I buy the Adobe package in September? It's a problem because I need it right now with the iMac, that's the whole point! Buying an iMac without buying my CS5 package with it will be POINTLESS. I don't want to be working on a trial that's gonna eventually run out and I am against working on a "naughty" version at all let alone for my portfolio and commercial work .. any clues?

You worry too much.

You use your ID, it works or it doesn't. Nothing to lose by trying.

Your brother can certainly buy it for you. Makes no difference.

"but then he won't be able to get a student discount if I use his up", It's not like they chip a hole through the id..
