Student discount

Hello, I convinced my dad to get an iMac BUT my sister is going to buy it for him so he can get it at the student discount price. My question is, I want to buy it at an apple store (I have like 3-4 within driving distance here in Boston), can we use the discount there or is that an online thing only?

Oh, and I'm also getting a 20" iMac too. I'm going to get it with an additional 1gb of ram for a 1.5gb total, can they do that at the store too or should I just save a few bucks and do it myself?

The store should honor the student discount, just bring an ID or something. You might check though, I think you're limited to 1 computer/year (if they check).

I bought my PowerBook and my Cinema Display at the Apple store and was able to get the student discount on them. I also got strange three dollar discounts on things like mice and keyboards, so I just always show my id.

You can't get discounts at CompUSA, etc, though.

Yeah I'm going to have my sister buy it for him and a cousin of mine who is a teacher can get my imac.

Should I wait for an intel based iMac or is that way down the road since they just updated them a few months back?

Any big software updated coming next month, should I wait?
I thought I read ilife'06 and an updated front row?

It should be noted that Apple retail stores do NOT honor student discounts on software. Hardware only.

bring an NUS card (or a US equivalent) to the apple store and you should be fine for the discount

There will probably be an iLife and iWork update at MacWorld in Jan. But yeah, you won't get any software discounts at the Apple Store, just online. iLife will come with the new computers, and if it doesn't you can get it for free (or cheap) as long as you bought it after iLife '06 is announced. You're only supposed to get one desktop and one laptop per year online, and they do check occasionally, but if she buys him one at one store and you one at another store, you'd probably be ok. Not saying that's right, kind-of abusing the system, but I'm sure Apple is happy with the sale.

Look for previous gen refurbs too, which are even cheaper.

When we got my wife's Mini they asked if either of us were students and she said "no, but I'm planning on going for my Masters early next year." The woman said "Oh? What school?" and gave us the discount.

So they aren't mega strict.

I'm not sure if they do any deals where they install it for free or what not, but I do know that buying RAM from Apple is more expensive than places like NewEgg and Datamem.

I say buy it elsewhere and install it yourself.

The limit is one laptop and one desktop per year. I want to know how that works. Is it calender year or purchase date? If it's calender year the OP could buy his dad's one this year for a discount and his own next year Purchase date would of course mean you couldn't get the discount on two desktops within a year of each other.

Either way, you could also tell them (if you get a rep that's anal about this buying so many in a year issue) that you are going to return your previous purchase that you had mistakenly bought for a relative (or something) and see if that flies.

I think if you get a rep that is that picky about you buying something from the store you should consider heading to a different Apple store to make your purchases, but that's just my opinion.

apple changed that policy to one type of mac per year. I copied/pasted this from the education shopping agreement page:

1. Desktop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
2. Mac mini: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
3. Laptop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
4. Display: A maximum of two (2) may be purchased per academic year
5. Software: A maximum of two (2) per software title may be purchased per academic year
6. iPod: One (1) per iPod family (iPod, iPod nano, iPod Shuffle 1GB) may be purchased per academic year (Note: there is no quantity limitation on iPod Shuffle 512MB)
7. iSight: One (1) may be purchased per academic year

Whenever I've bought things using my edu discount, they have always asked for my student ID.

From my experience with educational discounts, it is based on the academic year, which changes over somewhere around August at my school. So in my case, I could have a situation where I get a new Mac w/edu discount in July, and buy one again with discount in September. I don't know what Apple uses as the cutoff, but I imagine a similar thing, not a "You can't buy another Mac for a whole year" kind of thing.

In store will offer the same Academic discount as ordering online for Hardware/Accessories however they will not discount any software in the store, well at least at the store that is near me. They told me i had to order online to get a discount on software and i am far too impatient to do that..
