No high school discount, unless you're home schooled.
You can check Amazon, though. Sometimes the total saving from their rebates and lack of sales tax (for most states) is bigger than the normal Apple education discount, which is $100 for most consumer machines.

Try the Apple refurbished store. The prices are better than Education discounts, and you get the same warranty.
I got a student discount when I bought my stuff back on Black Friday. I'm a Senior in HS so maybe that's why... I talked about how I would be using it for Graphic Design in college so the guy just gave it to me, and to my sister as well. Maybe you can get lucky.
what? im pretty sure high school students can use the student discount. just click the student link and then find your school under the K-12 school link. theres no checking involved so even if you were a student you could still get the discount but im sure Apple would like for non student customers to pay full price.
No, students have to be in college/university to receive a discount. But you're right, I've entered that I attend one of the colleges nearby when I want to browse and see how much things are with the discount and I assume I could buy as well.

I've not seen where K-12 students can click a link and get a discount, other than home schooling.

So I clicked on the Canada link above, clicked through as a college student, and yes, there were MacBook Pros in the refurb section of the store. Too many to list here. Give it a try yourself. (I just made up a number when asked my student ID)

My sister-in-law is a university lecturer and has offered to get me an imac through their HE portal, which is great. The only thing I'm wondering is, if the machine and invoice has her name on it, how will this work with the applecare, given that I live at the other end of the country and have a different surname. Will the applecare people only deal with the named purchaser or are they more relaxed and not mind who they are talking to? Thanks for any help.
It should not affect applecare as you get to choose what information to put in the first time you turn on the computer and when you set up applecare. If you're worried about it, just buy it yourself from the Apple Online Store and pick the school they teach at.
In regards to refurbs, they are already marked down, so education discounts do not apply to them.
As others have posted, it shouldn't be a problem. AppleCare is tied to
the machine's serial number -- not the owner's name.
Also, be aware that you can defer the AppleCare purchase until just
before the 1-year warranty expires -- then buy it online at discount:

True. There is no follow up. One just needs to enter in that they are a college student, name whatever school, and the discount is applied. I know many who have done this. Not advocating, just saying that Mac makes it very easy to use that discount.
I know you are not advocating, but many do. This is exactly why these school discounts are becoming fewer and further between.
The discounts apply to those in college or faculty/staff in universities and k-12. This is why the site allows you to find your college (for students/faculty) or K-12 school (faculty only).
If you are not in school, please don't use the discount---if people continue to abuse it, it's not going to be around much longer.
Just say that you are going to a college. They don't actually check to see if you really are.

My grandma and grandpa said they were educators and they aren't. My dad is, so we are in right standing with our discount (Dad got the computer, didn't like it, gave it to them).
You can't get an education discount on a refurbished Mac. Sometimes the education price is better, but usually not. But, if you buy before September 15, you can get a free iPod if you use your school ID (and yes, they do check in that case). You can then sell said iPod for US$200+ and you end up with and even bigger "discount".
You should really just go have a look for yourself. The website is pretty self-explanatory.
