Greetings!

I'm a student living in California, and I'd like to buy a Mac Pro 8 core 2.8 Ghz with 320 GB HD and 8800GT. Using my student discount, this comes out to $2995, tax included.

Does anyone know of a cheaper option out there? Perhaps without sales tax, better buying options, etc?

Cheers in advance, everyone. :)

If your a member of a university, use Apple Developer Connection Student Membership.

It costs $106, but you get a free copy of Leopard which you can sell and 20% off all our hardware (1 Time use).

Base Price becomes $2340. Which comes well under the regular Student discount.

does this apply to undergraduate, and graduate students?

or only undergrad?

and only "universities"? or colleges too?

Been through the same dilema...

I've been through the same dilema. I looked at many of the 3rd party apple retailers who didn't charge tax and had free shipping. With the discount it came down to brass tacks. Especially going against that awful 8.5 percent tax... (political expletive). Without taking the time to crunch new numbers its usually not enough to risk dealing with a 3rd party. If I were you I would buy direct from apple with the discounted applecare. (don't forget to get your drives and RAM elswhere).

Having recently been in school I might recomend an alternative. Many students in creative fields (especially film, 3D, or VFX) feel they need the biggest and the baddest computer the first semester they are in school. Personally if I were starting out now I would start out smaller. I had to go back out to cali to finish one more semester of school this past year. My girlfriend who's still out there recently got the new aluminum iMac. This thing kicks ass. The processors are so freaking powerful now that you don't need to biggest and the baddest to start out.

I highly recommend this machine to students starting out. You can walk out the door with a full computer setup (and printer) for under 1500 that will get you through editing 101, photoshop for dummies, and aftereffects for poets. Then 2-3 years down the road when you really need some firepower for your thesis or whatever, you'll have that extra money, possibly invested wisely. I'm basing this on my experience in film school and assuming you're buying this for some kind of creative studies. So if you really want sound advice I would detail for the wise forum members what is you're studying and how far along you are. Especially for people headed to a freelance oriented field it makes so much freakin sense to have your biggest and baddest machine when you get out of school and really need it rather than when you're just starting out.

Its amazing how much you'll ramble on when you're waiting for the Fedex guy to get here with your new Mac Pro. Hope that helps a bit.

It's for any college. Undergrad or Grad. You CANNOT sell the copy of leopard you get with it without breaking the terms of the membership.

Me too, I got up at 8am just to be ready for him to show up. Yesterday he dropped off a package before 10 am, so I'm hoping...

Hey guys I received my MacPro about 5 days early because I called Fed Ex and requested a pick-up at the local sorting facility. Instead of delivery Jan. 23rd I picked up the baby on the 18th.

Just a tip for you guys who can't wait any longer!

If I am not going to be using my purchase for development purposes, rather just personal use, can I still use the ADC Student discount?

It seems odd that apple would have essentially 2 student discounts. Surely all students will immediately go for the ADC option. Am i missing something?

Technically, you should be using for developement uses, as myself. However, it's not like they check. Many people don't read forums, so most people don't know about the ADC student membership. Also, you can only purchase 1 system at ADC pricing...so people who buy more than 1 computer while in school would then use the regular student discount if they've already used the ADC.

The downside to the ADC is your only get 1 in a lifetime. Now your only in college so long, but 1 Mac Pro should last long enough for your degree.

The regular student discount stipulates that you can use the discount to get 1 computer a year while you are in college/university.

And/or once you become a teacher, as it is a education discount which covers both students and teachers.

I live in the UK and when I made enquiries about the ADC program, I was told that the standard HE discount was higher than the ADC discount. Is this correct?

I too am looking to buy a Mac Pro and the 8 core 2.8GHz with 2 Optical Drives and 8800GT is £1982.99 (£1705.37 with 14% HE discount).

Would it really be worth getting ADC to get an extra 4% off (if I do get 20% off), as that 4% would be £79 where it would cost £65 to join ADC in the first place
