Stuffit Expander driving me crazy...

A frined of my records his own music and uploads tracks as rar files for me to download. They download fine, but when I open Stuffit Expander to unstuff them, I get an error message that reads:

"An error has ocurred while exapnading the file 'ABCDEFG.rar' (Format error).

Error *17540"

Can anyone help, I'm tearing my hear out over this!
