Every time I try to expand a file, stuffit finishes in seconds, but never actually expands the file. This happens with every single file. If anyone has any suggestions or newer version of stuffit that will work on os 7.6.1, other than version 4.06, please send me the link. Thank you.

Are you having trouble with a particular file or with all .sit files? If so, the file may be either damaged or in a newer StuffIt format than your version of StuffIt understands.
To see if you have a particular file that's broken, you could download any old StuffIt file and try expanding it. For example, I picked a file at random to test with: On this web page, I clicked the first "1.0g" link to download some kind of Yamaha SCSI driver that is a StuffIt file. I couldn't expand it with StuffIt Expander 4.5, but I could with StuffIt Expander 5.5.
I've also seen cases where you can't expand a file by double-clicking on it, even if it has the .sit extension, but you can expand it by opening StuffIt Expander (or StuffIt Deluxe if you have the whole package) and then opening the file from within StuffIt.

Nope, you pretty much depend on having a way to unstuff files, and Aladdin Systems has not always used the same format, so you need the newest StuffIt Expander to handle files that were stuffed with the newest StuffIt.
When they changed the file format after version 4.5, I wrote to them to ask how I could create .sit files in the older StuffIt format, to distribute to teachers at our school who didn't yet have the latest StuffIt Exander. They replied that StuffIt Deluxe (their fanciest package, which I had purchased) could no longer create files in the older format and that I would have to get the "lite" (shareware) version of StuffIt (and pay for it, despite already having bought the deluxe version) in order to be able to create files in the older format. So it's no surprise that people have to upgrade StuffIt Expander to keep up with Aladdin's changes, so that .sit files from web sites won't have a newer format than they can expand. Yes, it is annoying when you have an older system.
If you are still having trouble, even with version 5.5, you could try version 6.0.1, which is available at versiontracker. Newer versions are also available, but they won't run under your Mac OS 7.6.1.

I've tried downloading a newer version. The problem is that they're all encoded in the stuffit fomat, which makes this a big problem. I have the 6.x file on my machine, but i cant expand it.
Are you sure? Versiontracker says that version 6.0.1 requires only System 7.1.1 or higher.

I still can't tell which of these cases applies:
(a) Your StuffIt Expander 4.06 is broken.
(b) Your .sit files are broken.
(c) Your .sit files are in a newer StuffIt format than StuffIt Expander 4.06 can handle.
Have you considered buying a copy of Mac OS 8.1 or later for at least one of your Macs?

Ok here's the problems:
Version 4.01 will not expand most files
Version 5.5 doesnt work at all, for any stuffit files
Cant find os 8.1 to buy, not really willing to spend money on os 8.5, becuase I got this mac for free.

Done... in the Jagshouse link above :scroll down: is Stuffit 5.2.7 stuffed in 3.6 If this doesn't meet your needs than I think we might be SOL.
You could get a legit copy at Hardcore Mac for $49.99, but I think we would want to spend as little as possible on such an old Mac.
BTW andypress... may I ask what in particular are you are trying to unstuff? If push comes to shove and its vital, we might be able to unstuffit then send it back in a stuffed version you might be able to use.
I downloaded version 5.1.2, it installed perfectly, but it keeps giving me the same errors "type 11, and type 3". I wish that macs
would just have .exe files like pc's, it would be so much easier. Has anyone ever had these errors before? I'm wondering if I should reinstall the operating system.

The .sit equivalent for PCs is the .zip file, but the .zip format hasn't changed the way the .sit file format has, so format-incompatibility problems are less common. But if your zip utility is broken or your zip file is broken, you'll have the same problems on a PC that you would with a bad StuffIt Expander or bad .sit file on a Mac.

You have a few old Macs, right? Did you try unstuffing on another one of the Macs?
Type 3 errors occur when an illegal instruction is encountered. They can be the result of a corrupt application or a corrupt software component used by that application. Conflicts among Mac OS extensions can be a cause, so you could certainly try reinstalling Mac OS. You could also try booting without extensions (by holding down the Shift key while the system restarts) and seeing if StuffIt behaves better.
Type 11 is officially a hardware exception, but it can also occur from corrupt software or an extension conflict.
Another trick to try: delete all files in the Preferences folder that are named StuffIt anything or Aladdin anything and try unstuffing again.
