Area 51
So after enjoying my White Castle :D , I leave the drink in my cup holder in my car for a few hours. Its pretty warm out so obviously the cup created some condensation in my cup holder. I threw the cup out and placed both of my phones in the cup holder unaware of the 1/4 inch or so of water.
Well about 30 seconds or so later I started to see my iPhone screen flash then the message came up about "this product does not work with iphone do you want to turn on airplane mode blah blah blah"
Still not knowing about the water I picked the phone up to see what was going on and instantly felt water running down my wrist. I checked the cup holder and like I said there was about a quarter of an inch of water in it.
Realizing what just happened I shut the phone down right away only for it to turn back on by it self about 7-10 minutes later.

The phone was in water speaker side DOWN.
It probably wasnt even deep enuff to hit the home button but Im just wondering what I should do now.
I have the phone off and "standing up" so the speakers are facing down.
When the phone turned back on by itself I noticed the volume was not working when I locked the phone right before shutting it down.

Im debating on blowing it out with my compressor but I dont want to risk driving any water further up into the phone.

Im just trying to save my phone here if possible. Any suggestions anyone has will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Turn the damn thing off first. :)

Put it in a bag of rice and let sit for a few days. Hopefully, it didn't get messed up when it came back on.

And do not blow compressed air on it.

Yea that was my first instinct was to blow in it. I even held it out the window (i was driving) thinking id blow out the water when actually I was probably just doing more damage... damn it! ...guess its an excuse to get a 3GS if she doesnt pull through! ;)

Hanging it out the window probably didn't hurt it. Coming back on might have.

If it doesn't work, the good news is you can get a replacement for $199.

HAve you checked the liquid submersion indicators? if they have not been tripped you CAN (i think it might be fraud) exchange at the genius bar.

Not to sound like a "fanboy" but I respect Apple as a company. They have always done right by me through Apple Care and just customer service in general so the "fraud" route is not even a consideration.

My only fear of getting a replacement is- will that extend my contract??
I dont want that because if/when a new iPhone comes out next june/july I will be eligible for the best price. I got screwed on the 3GS so I decided I wanted to hold out on any contract extension until the "2010" iPhone comes out.

Ok this is bad!!!
First off, WOW I didnt even know that strip was there.

There was some dust/crap in there so I blow in it to see if I can get a better view of the indicator and the phone turns on again!? (i shut it back off right away)

The strip does appear to be red. :(
Thats just my luck it has to be right in the bottom like that!
oh well.... I guess Ill give it a little while and see what happens.

Thanks for the help guys!

What I did: My iphone had water damage but also a crack Apple replaced it but then i sold it for $400 to get the iPhone 3gS (lets imagine you paid $199 for a replacement.) and no this does not effect upgrade status.

Mine seriously has a crack in the back casing also! Ive never even dropped the thing either.

What are you saying tho? Your phone had water damage and Apple still replaced it cause of the crack?? Dont even get my hopes up! That just sounds too good to be true.

update

I can blow in the dock connector to turn the phone on successfully every time!?
Strange..

HAPPILY posting from my iPhone!!!

Well against the advice I blew the crap outta the lower portion of the phone with my air compressor.
Sound is back (and I swear it's louder, but I'm sure the speaker might have been clogged with lint a little or something)
but anyways since my indicator is now red does that mean I say goodbye to my Apple Care??

Glad your phone is working :)
But I hate to be the downer and tell you that since the strip is red that your warrenty is void.

You are now out of warranty. IDK why you haven't put it in rice, but it's your phone. Good luck.
