So, my work Mac is (now) a 2023 13" M2 MBP. It came to me with Ventura on it. I upgraded this week to Sonoma. I was hoping it'd help with some network issues I've been having It did not.

This morning and for most of the day was fairly horrible over the VPN. ~500mb should not take five minutes to start copying and 22 minutes total to complete. I know there is VPN overhead, but this is NUTS! It's preventing me from working. QuarkXPress files take up to 10-12 minutes to save to the NAS. Crazy.

So, all day I've been trying to work while at the same time testing things. Lots of restarts. Finally, later this evening I hit on a workaround. The old 2015 MBP (which I say qualifies as Early Intel) is still running High Sierra and still copies, moves, saves, etc on the VPN just fine. Why does the VPN work on High Sierra, but takes a dump on Ventura/Sonoma? I'm using SMB and AFAIK it's SMB3. I have no idea what Apple changed, but they need to either change it back or fix it.

Anyway, here's the workaround. I have now turned on Internet Sharing on the old MBP and have told the Mac to share the VPN connection to the Thunderbolt #2 network adapter. The Mac is getting it's network connection from the Thunderbolt #1 network adapter. I have run a cable directly from the old MBP TB #2 adapter to the new Mac.

The new MBP gets an IP address from the old MBP and now the new Mac is connected to the work network through the old Mac. I can just CMD+K (Connect to Server) and away I go.

With the connection going through the old MBP that 500mb file copy is now less than two minutes (as it SHOULD be!). Come on Apple, what is this new VPN garbage?!

TLDR: Using the old 2015 MBP to share office VPN connection to new 2023 M2 MBP via Internet Sharing.

PS. I have thoughts on Ventura/Sonoma and NONE of them are good!!!! 😠

I had the thought that perhaps things might be related to the service order of connections. But checking the old MBP, it has the VPN connection prioritized the highest. That's the same as when using the VPN on the new MBP. So, not an issue.

Been working off the internet sharing from the old MBP this morning and it's working just fine. Got work done in the regular amount of time instead of hours later.

Hmmmm…it seems that because the internet sharing is on a different subnet, I can still use the new MBPs WiFi and also still be connected to my home network without losing any speed or having any issues with the hardwired connection.

This is very interesting.
