I'm just about to pull the trigger on a 2010 2.4 8 core. It's primary job will be as a DAW workstation but I like to play the odd game (assassin's creed and that sort) and I mean occasionally. Games are now calling for 3 ghz cpu's to play but I'm not all that familiar with the Xeons. I have zero desire for a console. I'm not into them as I find they tend to pull me in for a little too long. So will I be able to toss a game in under boot camp once a month for stress relief and not be pissed off?
 
3 ghz i7's are very very expensive. It's probably using a P4 3 ghz as the minimum, which is an entirely different chip with a different scale. You'll be just fine.

Thats what I was wondering but I don't REALLY play games. The amount that I play is so minimal that I imagine it would be a waste for me... as long as what's in there will do medium settings, I think I'll be fine. Unless Logic 10 gets optimized for GPU processing... then I'll get the biggest baddest video card I can :D

I just don't want to get something and get pissed off over something stupid like this (because dumb stuff like this will piss me off :p )

The 5770 is no slouch and should be able to keep up at medium settings with most games (really depends on the screen resolution though). But also keep in mind the 5870 is a $200 upgrade when you custom order, versus more money later - for a card that's almost twice as fast.

And for a card that is already one generation behind.

If gaming really isn't a big deal, I'd go with the 5770 as well and maybe upgrade to a 6870 next year. The PC versions of these cards go for about 180€ in Europe today and will certainly drop till the next Mac Pro update.
Given that the Apple 5870 was equally priced than the PC 5870 back in the days, the possible upgrade to a 6870 in the future might be a very cheap upgrade.
And although it does not offer more performance than the 5870, things like additional miniDP ports, DP 1.2 support and the price make this card very attractive (if Apple choses this card to be the next high end Mac Pro card).

I don't have the 5770, but the 4870 which basically has the same performance and it runs games like COD on maximum settings on 2560x1600 (no AA, though). The card is plenty fast for occasional gaming if you're not an enthusiast.
