is there a tv requirement for apple tv? we're considering getting it but were told that we couldn't until we upgrade our 10 year old television...true?

The current aTV requires a TV with an HDMI port. (Note - the HDMI port must support 720p ... doesn't affect many people, but some older Panasonic plasmas didn't support 720p)

I'm sure your 10 year old TV won't work with the aTV.

You can get an adapter to convert the HDMI output to analog audio and composite video that will work with most TVs manufactured in the last few decades, the problem being that the adapter costs more than the Apple TV and a chuck of the cost of a new flat panel TV.

It all depends upon how badly you want to hang onto your legacy equipment.

But these devices don't support HDCP and thus many things won't play. If he wants to rip his own DVDs then he is OK because they won't have HDCP DRM but most things you download will (including iTunes movies and NetFlix).
