subscription payments

I recently learned how to add funds to my "Apple ID Balance" and have a question about subscription payments. I have, in the past, been getting single transactions for features that I subscribe to; e.g. Apple Music, iCloud storage, etc., and would like to know if I add to my Apple ID Balance would it just deduct from that balance instead of my card on file.

So, instead of having a zero balance and it charging my card (as it's been doing for years) can I have a positive balance and it will deduct from that instead of charging anything to my card?

Yes. If you carry a positive balance it works exactly like that.
