If one would want to create subtitles for videos, what application would he use? Is there an easy and convenient application that you can suggest?

If you just want them burnt-in any video editor will do. You can just use title overlays, though it is a little annoying to work with. There's a plugin for Premiere and DaVinci that makes it easier - available for FCPX too, but the native tools now available are pretty great too so not really needed.

What do u mean by burnt-in, title overlays and also which are the native tools are you referring to?
I have English srt file. I wish to use that, to create an srt file of a language of my liking. So i was hoping to open the Eng srt, on the subtitle app and on it create the other language i wish. Possible?

If you have an srt you're not after burnt-in. Burnt-in means it's not dynamic subtitles, but the subtitle text is part of the actual video file, i.e. burnt into it. That's the same with title overlays.

When I talked about native tools that was inside Final Cut Pro. There are subtitle tools. But if you don't already have Final Cut that's a bit much.
The plugin I mentioned earlier supports some subtitle formats, probably including srt, for import and editing, but I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the plugin. It was available through FxFactory though.

I don't know about an easy to use free or low cost app, I'm afraid, but it is definitely possible, and if you have Premiere, FCPX or know Resolve, you can try either the FCPX tools or search for subtitle in FxFactory

SRT files are just text. Duplicate the file, open it in text edit or some other text editor and replace the lines of English text with what you want. Be sure to leave the time code and sequence lines alone.

Thanks, that’s great! What if I wish to create subtitles from scratch, on a video that doesn’t have an srt file? How do I set the time code?

http://www.aegisub.org is not bad. It's cross platform so it's not the most amazing Mac UI but it seems to work well for what I've used it for. You may prefer to use it for the translation stuff too I guess.
Yeah, the UI is typically inelegant for this kind of cross-platform free software but functionality-wise, Aegisub is fantastic. I've used it to subtitle videos including the translation aspect and once you get to grips with the UI you can get things done pretty fast in it.

I dont understand how to use it, the UI seems so outdated... im puzzled!
What exactly did u use it for?

Oh and one thing i always wanted to ask. On the srt file, is it possible to hide specific text that u do not want to appear on the subtitles? What i mean is, if theres a feature like the ability to hide info or notes :)

There must be some other app easier to work with than Aegisub. Something for OSX alone!
I wonder, is there a MacOSX application for subtitle professionals?

Perhaps film companies have their own custom made apps for creating subtitles?
