Subtitles not shown during playback (VLC)

Has someone else the problem too that during playback of a video file subtitles are not visible? I tried several videos with the proper subtitle files but none of them seem to work on El Capitan. VLC for example detects the subtitle file, I can choose the track, but no subtitles are shown in the video. This seems to be a problem for me since I upgraded from Yosemite (I'm now on PB 5).

Have you tried one of the nightly builds of VLC?

Yes, I installed the latest nightly build. Same problem unfortunately.
