Posting this in case useful to others. Reading the HP manual (!) I found connecting the USB B end (square plug) of the cable to the HP monitor and the USB A end to the mac, Mac OS automatically detected the monitor webcam. I can use (have tested) the 720p webcam in Teams and OBS studio.

Which model monitor are you referring to?

Were you having issues with your Mac not detecting it before?

Monitors with built-in cameras, mics and downstream USB ports have their own USB hub onboard; in this case, the webcam hooks into that to pass through to the host computer. There's usually one upstream port (USB-B) to connect to the host computer, so it sounds like it's all working as intended!
