Successful JB on 3.1.2 3GS!! :-) Backup/Sync Question??

Hi,

I just got my iPhone and what perfect timing with GeoHot's new JB release for the 3GS 3.1.2!!! :-D So I had no problems JBing the iPhone, and his install worked perfectly.

Since I'm new to this whole JB think; I just had a couple questions I'm hoping someone can help me out with.

1. Now with a JB iPhone will I still be able to "Sync" and perform "Backups" in iTunes??

2. Now if Apple releases a new update, if I update my iPhone I will lose my JB and my iPhone will get restored to factory settings or will it use one of my old backups to restore from??

3. Can I backup my iPhone in iTunes, and also backup all my JB apps within iTunes??

4. If I need to go to AT&T I would just restore my iPhone from an old backup or restore to factory, and then take it to AT&T, right?? And then later I can just go home and restore my JB backup from iTunes??

Yes, you will still be able to sync and perform backups through iTunes.

When a new FW is released by Apple, you should visit your local JB site and see what they say, 9 out of 10 times, they state that you should not pull the trigger on updating. There is usually a 3 to several weeks delay on ensuring the JB works or another JB to update to the new released Apple FW.

So to answer your question, if you pull the trigger, yes you will lose your JB and/or any possibilities of unlocking/Jailbreaking in the future. However, it will not restore your iPhone to the defaults, it will leave all your legitimate apps intact and may leave "hacked" apps icon on the springboard but not operable. And of course, remove any JB related apps.

The problem with this is if you perform the above procedure, you will leave "remnant" JB files on your iPhone. It's cleaner to do a complete restore which will reset your iPhone to defaults which at this point, obviously you lose JB capabilities.

3. Can I backup my iPhone in iTunes, and also backup all my JB apps within iTunes??

As stated in your first question yes. To backup JB apps within iTunes, there is an app called APTBACKUP in Cydia which you can use...follow the instructions from there.

4. If I need to go to AT&T I would just restore my iPhone from an old backup or restore to factory, and then take it to AT&T, right?? And then later I can just go home and restore my JB backup from iTunes??

Hopefully you don't have to do this but yes, I would do a full restore which completely wipes out your iPhone. Theoretically you can restore everything back once you do a JB (APTBACKUP) and JB your phone before you restore.

So when I perform a regular backup/sync in iTunes with a JB iPhone only my legal apps, contacts, songs, etc...will be backed-up/synced in iTunes; right?? And all JB features/apps will be ignored and not backed-up/synced in iTunes, right??

I've been doing some more research on backup JB apps, and I found the following "APTBACKUP", "APPBACKUP", "PKGBACKUP", and "CHRONUS".

Which one of these would be the best to use, or the one that is the most popular??

Ok, so my steps to take my JB iPhone to AT&T/Apple would be:
1. First, backup current JB iPhone in iTunes.
2. Perform a restore on the iPhone to wipe everything out and restore to factory settings.
3. "Restore From Backup" in iTunes from my latest backup to restore legal apps, contacts, songs, etc...
4. Go to AT&T/Apple...blah, blah, blah...
5. Go home JB iPhone again with "blackra1n".
6. Use either "APTBACKUP", "APPBACKUP", "PKGBACKUP", or "CHRONUS" to restore all my JB apps to my iPhone.

Are my steps correct??

This is right. Unless you use APTBACKUP (found in Cydia) which will then backup those JB applications as well.

I can't say which is better to use, I have used APTBACKUP/APPBACKUP and had no problems. However, I have stopped using those applications because it's a pain in the butt for me. Whenever new JB applications are released, I have to run APP/APTBACKUP again to reflect the changes. I guess you can use those applications before and after a restore.

Then again, the problem again is if you had JB application designed for a specific FW and then you upgraded your Apple FW to something else, and those JB applications would not work and oh just plain headache. I rather note my JB apps down and then download from Cydia again. Nice and clean.

No need to do Step 3. Just take it back to Apple/AT&T w/o any media or info on it. They are just going to wipe that stuff anyway when fixing or replacing your device.

yes, that will do.

Just a clarification, AptBackup does NOT backup your jailbroken apps. It backs up a list of apps and stores them in a file which is normally backed up by the regular iTunes backup process.

Should you ever need to restore (the firmware and then from a device backup), the first package you would download in Cydia is AptBackup and then you'd click the Restore option. It will take a while but it will go and redownload all your jailbroken apps/packages. It won't however, backup any custom themes you yourself may have created.
