Such futuristic flatness and plain looking icons! What was once for kids only is now for desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones!

Yeah, because a grid of flat icons is also super original. Innovation requires inspiration. There is rarely a true original idea.

It all comes from AOL Kids (And cartoons before hand). The future is cartoon shows on computers

What is the point of your post? While I'm struggling to use Windows 8, I think its aesthetic design is great. The live-tiled startscreen is gorgeous and the concept is perfect, much better than iOS's 'dead' icon homescreen. I just don't like the controls in Windows 8 because I use it on my laptop with a mouse. It definately isn't optimised for use with a mouse - you have to move the cursor too much, going from one corner of the screen to another all too frequently.

Computer technology long ago reached the point that "look and feel" can be adjusted to suit almost any tastes. And this in turn means that fashion trends can sweep through the computer field just as they do in other fields. One year it might be flat, pastel-colored icons, another year it might be photorealistic 3D icons, and so on. It's all highly subjective and a matter of personal preference.

The only time it irritates me is when the industry moves as a herd, as it is doing now for smartphones (Apple included). Just because some other vendor has decided flat icons are the Next Big Thing doesn't mean that every vendor has to immediately start using them.

In any case, if flat icons it must be, at least the ones on iOS look better than the ones on any version of Windows. Windows 8 is just the latest in a long line of mistakes for Microsoft, ever since Bill left. That's why I worry about Apple now that Steve is gone.

I doubt Microsoft even looked at AOL Kids when designing Windows 8. Yes, there is a slight resemblance. Just as much resemblance that iOS has with this.

Bringing back old memories.

Functional, but complicated and inelegant. Glad I got that PowerBook 520c (best damm computer I ever bought!)

That was during the days when Macs and PCs both were the lesser options in my opinion. IBM clones had a good bit of power and dev support, but they were clunky and difficult to use. Macs? That was around the System 7 era, which...if we're honest about it...wasn't all that great. Adobe and the desktop publishing industry is what kept Apple on life support until the iMac and iPod revolution.

That was the era when the Amiga reigned supreme. If you wanted power to play games, make music, design graphics, all within an actually decent OS, you got an Amiga 1200. Nothing else could even come close to matching it, and it's still considered one of the all around best computers ever made to this very day.

It's a shame Commodore didn't survive the 90's. I still think things would be much better today, or at least much more interesting, if they took advantage of the Amiga, rather than letting it languish away into obscurity.
