Today I realised that there has appeared a folder in my home directory called "Volumes"

It's here:

/Users/jenny/Volumes

I've never seen it before and I don't know why it's there.

It's empty.

Re-booting doesn't get rid of it.

Any advice?

The only 'Volumes' folder is in the path Mac HD/System/Volumes. Do a 'Get Info' on your "new" Volumes folder. I've included what mine says for the System below -- just click on 'Spoiler.' If the User Volumes folder has your username in the Sharing & Permissions first position under 'Name', then it is safe to Trash. You won't be able to Trash the System Volumes folder since it will be "read only".

If you are interested in the Boot Volume Layout see this wonderful article.

Yes I know I can still do a shift-command-g to /Volumes, and there it is, at jenny-imac/APPLE SSD/Volumes, which of course is normally invisible. And when at jenny-imac/APPLE SSD, I can hit command-shift-[period] and then see the (really invisible) "Volumes folder.

I just wondered why this visible one had appeared in my User folder.

Well I shall be bold, trash it, and re-boot.
