Sudden crash, but not KP

I've been getting sudden crashes, just the mouse and everything won't respond anymore. If the system has the screen dimmed, the screen will brighten up, but the system has already crashed. Same if the screen is off, it'll turn on but the system's already crashed.

I've checked the logs, nothing in the logs. No kernal panic. I've even disabled Coolbook and it still tends to do that every so often.

Anyone else experiencing this?

That sounds like you are running Windows when it happens. In that case, it's just part of the build-in features of the Windows

Seriously, during the last couple years of my experience using Mac OS, I've have experienced what you described. That why people say "Mac doesn't crash!". Something is definitely wrong.

How often do you experience it?

Are you sure you have completely disabled Coolbook? Try running it with the standard voltage settings, or try reinstall the OS (to make sure that it's not something software related).

It happens randomly. Sometimes when I just unplug a USB, sometimes when it wakes from a dimmed screen, sometimes it might just start up and crash.

I have thought of that. I have backed up the entire system using time machine and wiped the hard drive clean with a clean install of OSX. It doesn't crash as often but sometimes, it might crash with the same effect.

Based on my old PC days experience, it could be a defective RAM. Seeing your other post, you seemed to have a lot of other problems with this machine too. If you are still within your 14 day return period, bring it back for a new one.

A good MBA should work out of the box without having to use coolbook and do the thermal paste mod. I have a Week 1 MBA, it didn't need any mod's and stayed cool for normal workload. I did the mod's later to help cool it down when I rip movies. That's the only task that I do which would throttle the CPU to max freq for a prolonged period of time.

Yeah.. I've been having some problems with this machine. The system crashes aren't normal system crashes I've seen on a windows machine or on a mac. It just freezes... but if I were to press the power button (not holding it down), it pops up asking if I wish to shut down, restart, sleep, etc. but I can't select anything and closing the lid doesn't sleep the system.

The heat issue is gone, probably because the thermal paste I've used didn't settle in or something. I'm running with about 10-20 deg C lower (w/o coolbook, or 15-20 deg C lower w/ coolbook) then a stock MBA (comparing from my other MBA).

Im suspecting its the hard drive sudden motion sensor. About 90% of the crashes seems to happen when I move the system. So far, the system hasnt crashed in a day now, so I'll keep looking into that.
