Hi!

Since a few days back, after using my MacBook Pro 2009 for an hour or two, suddenly the laptop doesn't let me save any documents (no difference between Apple applications and 3rd party applications) or browse webpages.

I've tried using Cocktail to fix permissions and clean caches, as well as using Cmd+R and a tip from blog.chron.com:
1. Restart Lion, and before you hear the chime, hold down the Command and R keys.

2. You’ll be at the Repair Utilities screen. Click the Utilities item in the Menu Bar, then click Terminal.

3. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.

4. The password reset utility window launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the dropdown below it, select the user account where you’re having issues.

5. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the Reset button there.

None of the above have fixed the issue. Until now, the only way to use the laptop again is to restart it, which gives me another 1-2 hours of usage before the same problem arises anew.

Does anyone know a permanent fix to this issue? Does anyone know what's wrong?

Regards,
Peter

I'm a rolling stone.
This, in my opinion is not a permissions problem, permissions don't change and gets resolved after a restart, there is something else going on.

You didn't say what actually happens, lets say you want to safe a file, click save from Menu or Command-S what do you get, do you get the save dialogue box, and if so, do you get an Error?

Also, make a new User Account, logout or preferably restart and login into that new account, make it an Admin Account, see if the problem occurs there, if not your User Account is the problem, if yes it is System wide.

Thx for your reply.

When I do Command-S, the program will just show a dialogue saying "The file cannot be saved". It doesn't have any error code or similar. It doesn't show the save dialogue first either.

Thx for the tip about making a new user account. I might try that one. Let me know if by my description above you got any more clue as to what it might be. :)

No not yet, first try the other User for a while, this will give us more information, if the problem is gone it is only your normal User Account which is affected and is easier to fix than if it's System wide.
