I've had my Imac for almost 6 weeks now.
I'm in the media business so i need the computer for lots of Editing & Rendering.
Last week was the first time i really started testing the machine out, i had to finish a project for a customer.
I started rendering out the HD material for their youtube channel.
After 3 of those 2 minutes Videos in a row suddenly the fan started roaring very loud (for the first time since i bought it) which is normal i figure.
I have to say it cooled down pretty fast once it was done.
But one thing i have noticed is recently when i boot the machine and its in normal status i can hear the fan working, low noise but it's there from start suddenly
Why is this happening? the first 5 weeks it never did that! it was totally silent when fresh booted!
Have i woken up a sleeping dog? :D

Would apretiatte some advice
thanks

Thanks that's great information.
But i don't really know if the issue demands such radical methods, well not now at least :D

The noise doesn't bother me, it's just that i was wondering why it's suddenly running up from start and if it's telling me somthing

Gracias

Use iStat Pro to monitor CPU temperature and fan speed and even CPU usage.

Btw, the method I linked to is not really drastic and takes less than a minute, though a restart is required.

Good widget.
Now who wants to compare Fanspeeds so i have a guideline :)??

Optical drive 998 rpm
Hard Drive 1097 rpm
CPU Fan 938 rpm

and this stats show when i'm just surfing the net (mail is also open but that's it) low fan noise is still audible.

Here's mine at idle

Optical Drive 1000
Hard drive 1098
CPU 999

thats pretty much equal.
Are you hearing any fan noise at those stats?

Don't know what to say about audible fans from bootup. Maybe it's all in your head.

1000/1100/940 is base fan rpms for the iMac. It's very, very quiet, but you will hear them a little bit if you're in a completely silent room and/or stick your ear next to the hdd vent that's under the stand. They are fans, and they're moving parts that displace air, afterall.

I get what ur saying TMRaven.
but my Post was not about complaning, cause i know there will always be some kind of noise with this machine.
I mean this forum is all about that kind of paranoia :D

My issue is the before & after scenario i'm confronting.
Like i mentioned there used to be no fan sound at all and now suddenly it's there when i boot the system.
That's what i'm trying to pin down.
You say the stats are basic, fine but that still doesn't explain the faning
I can't believe that i heated the cores so much that it still has to cool them days after..so it's something else

As I said before, perhaps it's all in your head. When I first got my 27 inch iMac, I was coming from the G5 iMac of 2004-05. So naturally, at first, this machine seemed like it was in complete silence the whole time. Now that I'm accustomed to it, I can always hear the very subtle whisper of the fans and the hdd all the time. And speaking of booting up, the most noticeable thing I'm hearing when I boot up the system or wake it from sleep is the HDD revving up to its 7200rpm.

As for the severity and how loud your fans sound to you, nobody can know for sure unless you provide adequate video with a very good mic. If the difference is night and day to you, then perhaps take it into apple. But with 1000/1100/940, the difference shouldn't be night and day.
