Suffering pop-ups Safari

Hi guys,

I'm at a loss. I'm currently being plagued by loads of pop-ups when browsing in safari. I've tried the obvious things; remove website data, check extensions and remove anything unwanted, ran some programs (Malwarebytes and some other which i already removed again and do not remember the name of).

I consider myself fairly knowledgable on computers and have always managed to solve such issues by using Google. This one however seems very stubborn and i'm not sure what else i can do.

Extensions i'm running: AdBlock 2.63.0 and Ghostery 5.4.10
If required i can post links of the pop-ups i'm getting, but not sure if thats a save idea to do

Post screen captures of the popups.

Next time you experience one that you wish to show us, do this:
1. type command-shift-4 (this changes pointer to crosshairs)
2. drag across the popup using the selection rectangle, then...
3. let go of the mouse button.

Then, post the screen capture.

I'd also download "MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac":
https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

Note on how MB 3.0 works:
- the download is free
- it will "invite you" to register for the paid version -- YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS
- after 30 days, the downloaded "pay/demo" version automatically reverts to the free version.

It's good software.

Quit Safari then hold down the shift key when you restart it. That should stop it from going back to that site that is causing this.

@Fishrrman I've included some screenshots of three that came up just reloading this page.

They all seem related to Mackeeper, a known and stubborn piece of software. I've tried the steps on the following link but have thus far been unsuccessful.

In addition i've ran the program you suggested:


@Weaselboy I've not heard of this method before, what exactly does the shift do when holding it at the restart? I just did it and unfortunately the pop-ups have not stopped :/

Sometime web pages will "trap" you in a loop where each time you open the browser, it takes you right back to that page and the popups continue. Holding the shift key stops it from returning to the last opened page.

Try downloading and running Etrecheck. It will create an anonymized report you can post here for us to look at. It will show all hidden launch and startup items and maybe we can see what is causing this.

It does look like you have installed some sort of adware. Can you think of anything you installed at the same time this started?

Hey man,

I am having the same problem. I talked to a apple specialist yesterday, and he was confused also. We got disconnected but never got a call back. I didn't feel like going through it all again so I will call another time. I want to get rid of it before I install the new OS.

Do you have MacKeeper installed?
GET RID OF IT. Every last trace.

Have you run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac yet?
If not, STOP RIGHT THERE.
Run it, and then get back to us with the report.

The problem seems to have been solved. I am no longer getting annoying pup-ups by MacKeeper.
I have no clue what eventually solved it unfortunately
