Suggestions for photo management app

Hi all,

I wonder whether there's anyone that could help me with a few suggestions?

My parents have 2 different iCloud accounts and one mac mini (running 10.9 I think - it's a 2010 mac mini). Currently only my dad's account is linked to the camera upload in iPhoto, with my mum's photos having to be synched manually which happens very rarely!

They've asked me for my help and I'm not sure what they're after is possible, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ideally, this is what they want:

All of their photos and videos on their iOS devices to end up in 1 place, which can then be organised into albums that can be seen on their TV (via whatever box/app needed for this) and also on their iOS devices. No photo editing needed specifically but sorting the photos into albums would be needed. My mum likes to have photos of recent things on her iPad so that she can show people, but these photos were often taken by my dad with on his own icloud account!

Things I've looked at so far include:

iPhoto - outdated and can't have 2 icloud accounts linked
Photos - same issue with 2 icloud accounts
Aperture - ditto, and outdated
Lightroom - seems quite expensive, and not 100% sure they'd have the ability to see things where they want
Dropbox camera upload to 1 dropbox account, but this is online and feels more like a backup service.
Plex camera upload - this is the same, there isn't a way of sorting, grouping, tagging, renaming etc...

Why not just use the Photos app with shared albums? That way it doesn't matter what device they are on.

If any of you are Amazon Prime members, you get free UNLIMITED photo storage from Amazon. They limit how much other stuff you can upload, but photos are unlimited and full size. Amazon allows you to create family albums that can be shared with I think up to five people who don't have to be Prime members. Amazon has a native app for the Amazon Drive, which is where the photos go. I haven't set this up myself - I just found out about the free storage, though I've been a Prime member for a while - but it seems pretty flexible.

Interesting - yes they are prime members. I'll have a look into that thanks.

I've moved across to iCloud Photo library myself to update myself on what it does and it seems pretty solid so far. Would be a 2tb drive upgrade though!

I use dropbox to get my photos from my phone to my computer. I don't use it as backup, but have the auto-upload turned on, and then every few days I DL from dropbox to my computer, and it removes the photos from dropbox. I use LR for photo management, but once they are on a single computer, your parents could use whatever program they want.

Yeah, there doesn't appear to be a 'server' option with multiple phone libraries so its looking to be pick 1 service and add the second ipad account photos manually.

I'm leaning towards getting my dad upgraded to photos, along with the mac mini they have, so that everything is up to date software wise, and he gets all the benefits of video backup, access to everything, etc. It'll then just be the task of plugging my mum's ipad into the mini to move photos/videos off it and into photos. She can browse the icloud photo library on the apple tv and they can share/copy photos to her ipad if she wants to take it out and about to show people. Her iPad is wifi only so in most instances when she's showing people the photos she wouldn't have internet connection anyway.

You looking for good app similar to Apple iPhoto app? If you do not like Apple new Photo app?

You could try Picasa, Apple Aperture, Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One, Loom, MyPhotostream, Photoscape X, Lyn, Unbound or Pixa.

You can have the same dropbox account on each phone; I have my iPad and iPhone setup and whenever I take photos on either device, they upload to the same account. Then you login/install dropbox on a single computer and the photos from all the relevant devices will automagically show up there. Then you just move them out of dropbox onto the computer locally.

I have honestly never used Photos, but it sounds like the sticking point is the upload portion of the problem, not the actual management of the photos once they are locally stored? Dropbox will simplify getting the photos to a central location to manage. As long as they are moved out of dropbox regularly you shouldn't have any storage issues as far as reaching a data cap.
