Suggestions for picture viewer that may function as a lightbox for Photos?

This is a really weird request.. I'm trying to transition my mum away from Aperture *before* it eventually breaks but she's so used to being able to select a bunch of photos to bring them up at once and compare them side by side..

I botched together a system where she can multiple select/edit in/Preview but that requires a lot of faffing about moving preview windows, making it full screen, etc.. Not what preview is for - even in "contact sheet" mode it's not ideal..

I might want a single purpose app that opens the selected pics all in one window as big as they can, with the ability to zoom and pan around them..

Is there some obscure image viewer that's flexible enough to do this? People have been asking for this sort of feature for Photos for years and Apple seem to shrug it off (despite it being super useful for multi display set ups!) - I cant think of anything other than a work-around..

Try Adobe Bridge. It has a pretty cool review mode, list mode, etc. But that would only work on images out in the filesystem, ie not in an Aperture managed library.

And it also wouldn't see the changes she'd made in Aperture, unless she'd written them out by exporting.

There are some applications that can browse within the Aperture library, like Graphic Converter, but since editing outside of Aperture is kinda prone to problems, they don't really have much in the way of compare views. And it might create more problems than it would solve.

Might be better to just start the transition. Even if you get a non-trivial hack working, it will break eventually.

Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot Adobe bridge even exists. I'll experiment with that for a while.

I've found a funny work around by opening a browser window in full screen (or two tabs in split screen even in Safari) and pointing them both to icloud.com/photos.. Then I can view 2 images on one screen and another in the main window of display 1.. Any edits i do appear on the web version of icloud surprisingly fast for me.. Only a few seconds after the edit. It's a bit funny having to navigate to the same place 3 times, but for comparing recent imports it's ok.

Hopefully this'll work for her until Apple add multi monitor/window support.

Try Graphic Converter. It has a nice browser. You can scale image sizes, select groups of images, and much, much more.
