i've had 4 iphones and i always notice that when i first get them the external speaker is a lot louder for ringtones, speakerphone, etc.
after time being spent in a pocket i suppose it's natural for lint and debris to accumulate in the little holes around the speaker deafening the sound.

so what's a good way to clean it? blowing into it does absolutely nothing. part of me thinks i should just take it apart and tear off the fabric portion on the attenna cover.

anyone else have this problem? other solutions?

I get this problem quite a bit. This might be weird, however, what I do is take a staple and straighten it out and clean out the little holes. I find that is about the skinniest thing I can get in there (bring on the "thats what she said jokes") I could hardly hear out of the speaker at all but now its extremely loud. I guess i forgot what it was like to have a speaker without a bunch of build up in it. That should work just find for ya

i gave it a shot and that actually did work rather well. not the ideal solution, but it got the job done for now!

Man, that works!
I just cleaned out the little holes in my first gen. iPhone with a straightened staple and I can hear things from the external speaker so much louder now!
Thanks for the tip sculfort! :D

If you want your speakers really loud, then poke them through slightly with a needle. Many people have done this.

Or you could just get a 3g. The speakers on that baby are much better and don't get clogged up. I love it.

I'm an ATT user so while I don't have to have my phone unlocked, it's nice to have it that way. I prefer the metal back on the 1st gen iphone although 3g and the psuedo GPS features would be nice. i know the speaker is louder on the new model as well.
assuming they release a 32gb version i'll pick one up then. but in the meantime, i'm content with a cheaper phone bill and basically the same phone.
