Suggestions on Graphic Creation charges

I teach at a high school with a matrix board on the football field. We have approximately 263 different graphics that need to be created for the fall season. I am trying to get a fair charge for the booster club to pay for my students and I to create these. They are about 45% still graphics and 55% animated.

I would like to find out what a professional would charge for these as well as what might be fair for us. This way if they balk at what we want to charge them, I can direct them to a professional who would probably be charging quite a bit more.

I teach TV production, so we do have the equipment and have done this type of work before, but I would not consider it the focus of what we do here. It is just additional work that needs to be done over the summer.

I don't even want to get into the discussion of teachers getting paid what we are worth. I could go on with that topic for a while.

I do this kind of thing professionally, and I gotta tell you, I would charge about $50 per still graphic and $75-150 per animated depending on the complexity. And this would be rock bottom prices and assuming that they all would be stylistically related.

So, $5,000 for the stills, and twice that for the animated ones for a total of at least $15,000. This would get a rate of $57 per graphic on average. I would guess to for a bunch of high school kids that the time would be an average of 2 hours per graphic [over the life of the project, slower at first but get faster over time], or $28.50 per hour. Which is kind of a low rate professionally. I would be trying to hit $40 per hour minimum if I was doing it myself.

For high school kids, I would shoot for a price that grosses the group about $12-14 an hour. About $6,000 total or so.

That is a freaking lot of work to do, but good experience none the less.

Yeah, 263. Varsity, JV, 9th, 8th, 7th, and 6th grade team player graphics. Sponsor graphics, game graphics, good play graphics. It never seems to end. At least this year I have time to create. Last year the board turned on for the first time 20 minutes before the first game. We were able to run it withe about 60 animations that night.

Everything we had last year needs to be recreated due to our new display system. That is going to be a pain since the old format was 208x160 and the new format is 720x480.
