Hey everyone. First off, let me say that I purchased a 12" Powerbook a month or so ago, and it is my first mac. The experience has been GREAT. I am so productive with it using Expose and its long battery life, it is wonderful. Now onto my comment: I am kind of sick of everyone saying that it would be stupid to buy a 12" Powerbook, how it is 10 month old technology, and how it is near useless now. That is completely untrue. It is only 170 mHz slower than the G4 15" Powerbook, has a good harddrive, decent graphics card, and is VERY portable and small. For a student such as myself, this is great. However, I am waiting for the 13.3" Macbook with CoreDuo Merom processors and I will buy that. But until them, this is a great computer, is not slow, and event hough it hasn't been updated in a while, does not lag far behind the G4 15" as people claim. Sure, the resolution isn't that great, but that's what Expose is for.
Now that I have that off of my chest, I have some questions that I would like your assistance and help for:

1) RAM: I have the standard 512 mb RAM inside of it right now (2 x 256's) and I wanted to upgrade it to the max 1.25 GB. So, I am looking for a 1 GB memory stick (no, not sony ;) ). So I have been looking around, and there are so many sites that have different prices I don't know what to get. If someone could please just paste a link into this post of a good 1 GB RAM module for my 12" 1.5 GHz Powerbook that is a decent price, I would be VERY appreciative. I really have scoured the sites and can't make a decision. So please don't tell me just to look on a certain site, please give me the link to the correct memory module at a really good price on one of the plethora of memory websites available. Thanks.

2) I will be heading off to college next summer (or uni as we all like to call it on MR), and I want a cool bag for it. I know there have been lots of bag threads, but I am looking for something more specific. Since I will only have about 2-3 classes per day, I am looking for a cool "shoulder-sling" bag if you know what I mean--with the one strap and the pouch that hangs by your side. It needs to hold a 12" Powerbook (and the possibility of putting a 13.3" Macbook in it, which probably won't be much bigger) a few books, pens, pencils, that type of stuff. If anyone has a good recommendation that would be great, but it needs to look at least a little masculine (no, there needn't be any razors or flame throwers on it), but it is for school so I don't want to look like a complete dork.

3) Question: How can I put a custom picture beside my name in the login screen where I have to enter my password?

I think that is it for now. Thanks everyone!

Wow, great. Any reason I should buy the $124 one that is "Samsung Original" over the $109 one? Thanks a lot CanadaRAM!

Question #1 checked off!

Only if you have a thing about the name brand. Both are good chips, both will have identical performance and both have lifetime warranty.

The point is with a good, Mac-centric company like Data Memory Systems (UN-like unnamed large mail order companies that should be scrambled or fried over-easy) -- DMS doesn't sell low cost $#!^ with 1 year warranty, or generic RAM that is 'maybe' compatible. They don't have a punitive restocking policy. And the DO have knowledgeable people who answer the phone literally within 20 seconds if you have questions.

Every piece they sell is tested and guaranteed for that model Mac. So their $109 and $124 piece are both excellent choices and zero-risk.

Thanks a lot for your follow-up and information. Ordered! Now, for the other questions...

(One more question)

4) What is the difference between using FileVault and just setting a login password?

Mad props for what? to canada ram?

Thanks, I will check into that company.

Anyone else on the other q's?

bump.....please people, need help. Big thanks to CanadaRAM for the RAM suggestion, it is on its way!

Moshiiii-I checked out the Timbuktu bags. They look very cool, and I will probably be buying a Laptop Messenger one (hmmm, grey and burnt orange or stealth black..). But I have a 12 inch Powerbook, and will be getting the 13.3 inch macbook. Is that too much overkill for the laptop and a textbook or two? Should I get a small?

Anyway, I still have the question about changing my login picture. I have no idea how to do it or if it is possible. I have the picture I wan't on the log in screen as my iChat picture. Thanks...

Under "Accounts" in System Preferences.
Select the "Picture" Tab.
Select "Edit" next to your current picture.
At the bottom, select "Choose" and you can pick what ever picture you have on file, and also edit it to get the perfect size.

Wow, how did I miss this that one....

Thanks, I've got my desired picture on their now.

So what is the difference between FileVault and just a login password?

(That is my last question, you all have been great)
