Good morning everyone,

As I’m certain you are all aware, coronavirus continues to have a firm grip over world events (sports and travel cancelations, school delays or cancellations etc.) This also appears to be extending to the technology sector as well, and the slate of new laptops Apple appears to be readying may be delayed by a bit.

Unfortunately, I am now faced with my university turning to online courses for the time being, along with a week of cancelled classes. In light of this I am looking to pickup a decent laptop to replace the terrible Dell I currently have, and MacBooks seem to be the ones that could fit my bill.

I’ve been eyeing an entry level MacBook Pro or MacBook Air to help me complete my studies, but remain hesitant due to the potential of both devices being replaced in the near term future. Since I am not in the market of replacing machines that often, I am trying to take longevity into consideration as well when it comes to specs, along with battery life.

What course would you guys take in this situation?

Thanks for all of your help!

Edit: My max budget is $1,600, sorry for not saying earlier.

If you have to buy now, perhaps buy used? Then you can move it along when the newer one comes out and minimize your loss.

I only wish I had such an amount of disposable income. If you had to buy something right now what would you do?

Currently waiting for the new MBP13 to come out for my daughter to do the same. She is currently using a 3 year old MacAir that has seen better days. If the MBP13 stays in the $1300 - $1500 range, I think it is the best bang for the buck currently.

I suggest you contact your school for their thoughts. They would have a better idea of what sort of system requirements would be necessary for whatever courses you take. Moreover, you provide zero guidance on budget, something your school should be sensitive to.

I was looking to top out at $1,600, I apologize for not including that in the OP. I’ll add it in right now!

I know it's slightly above your budget, but it looks like the base model 16" is now on sale again at amazon and bestbuy.com for 2,099.

Might even be a bit cheaper at the Apple Refurbished store.

That is certainly something to consider, however, I was shooting for the 13in Pro or Air because of their portability and decent battery life.
