Summary of Mountain Lion problems

Could we get a summary list of problems & wish list of fixes to be done by Apple regarding ML? Snow Leopard was a good and stable version, but I had to upgrade to be able to do apps for new iOS 5. Otherwise, would advice everyone to be careful regarding the upgrade.

I am using MacBook Pro / Intel 2.4GHz 8GB rotating 250GB disk

Problems:

1. Using a second screen, closing laptop does not put the machine to sleep. Advices from Apple support did not help (PRAM reset, SMD). Usability degraded 2 out of 10.

2. Icons in finder sizebar for applications not available any more. Confirmed by Apple support. Usability hit 4/10.

3. When accidentally hitting Time Machine when laptop out of the range of TimeMachine just shows the TimeMachine window, but does not let you out but through hard boot. Usability hit 2/10.

4. Unnecessary change of AddressBook to Contacts and hiding ~/Library. Potential for screwing up your years old AddressBook. No help from Apple Support. Usability hit irreversable. Good luck I have everything in my Samsung Galaxy S2, and can recover.

5. Reduced size red/yellow/green dots in window; harmful and you really need to hit in the centre now. Usability hit 2/10.

6. Boot time; slowed dramatically. Per experience should not be a problem, but since five days upgrading to ML have spent time with tens of reboots. Usability hit 2/10.

7. Slowness; clearly one should not upgrade but go and get a new engine to really do the upgrade. Apple is on the Microsoft XP way now. Usability hit 5/10.

8. Some applications are incompatible, the applications identified. This is severe behaviour of any SW upgrade. One should be able to determine beforehand if to upgrade by the system to test if some of your apps are not going to be working, and which those applications are. Quality hit 10/10.

9. I am crying here, because there seems not to be a channel to feedback Apple. I would hope there is enough power, maybe through a group in Facebook to make it happen.

Disappointed but forced to live with it.

Google can help you with at least a few of these: http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/. I presume this is what you mean by the hiding of Library.

Intentional. You can do it quickly by pressing Control-Shift-Eject, or press the Power button once quickly and then hit S or click the Sleep button in the dialog that pops up.

Not sure what you mean by this.

Haven't seen this, must be a bug related to something specific. Try force quitting it next time (if the regular force quit window doesn't appear, hold down Command-Option-Shift-Escape for around 10 seconds until it quits).

What potential for screwing up? Yes, there's always a chance of losing something when you upgrade, but it has nothing to do with the name change or hiding ~/Library (which is easily undone). Besides, that's what your Time Machine backups are for (and iCloud).

Eh, not a significant change. Try using the keyboard, I find it much more efficient. Still, I understand if you're used this and they change it.

Hmm, shouldn't be the case (definitely isn't for me). With all these other complaints, perhaps a clean install is in order? First, check your Startup Items and LaunchAgents/LaunchDaemons in /Library to see if anything there is slowing down startup.

Again, not my experience nor most users. Probably caused by third-party software or perhaps a specific bug.

It happens, especially when developers don't update their applications. Don't cry foul to Apple when third-party developers are idiots.

No, you're not. Roll back if you have to, or fix the problems you can (which is pretty much everything on the list). Don't sit and cry when you can actually do something about your problems.

It also took SL a few 10.6.x releases to become that stable beast.

Another choice would have been to run ML in a virtual machine for solely developing apps.

I can not personally verify all of your problems but I have tried a few.
I am with you that there are some bugs but for myself they do not degrade my usability.

Size slider is gone or rather moved. You can click the "gear" drop down button and select view options and the size slider is there.

I have had this happen 1 time out of 10 tries and I could not get out by clicking the cancel button, had to hard reboot.

The name of address book changed but I've seen no other big changes like risk of losing my contact information, but like you I do have them backed up elsewhere.
If you are looking for ~Library, on the Finder menu bar, click "Go" and then press your option key and Library will populate.

The dots did get a tad smaller, I personally never use them other than the minimize yellow dot but I can place my cursor over the very edge of any button and click and they work just fine.

I have not experienced any slow booting but again it has been a while since I've used SL.
From a cold start, press power button started stopwatch the moment the grey screen appeared, 11.1sec to desktop.

Maybe the SSD has a great deal to do with it but for lack of a better word, my ML install is quite "snappy".
When clicking Safari, Mail, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, iTunes, iPhoto from the dock all of the apps loaded within one "bounce" of the icon except for mail which took almost 4 bounces (if this can be used as a measure of time )
No stuttering while using any apps thus far.

Agreed, some apps have not been nor will be updated to work with Lion or ML.
One has to do there research here if they are using older apps especially any that use Rosetta.

This is actually pretty cool and I never noticed before. I wonder if this behavior works in AirPlay? I'd love to watch videos on the big screen with the display closed. (And still be able to use my Apple Remote.

Yes. This happened in Lion. Presumable it was done so the window title bar could be made smaller. (But since I mainly still use Snow Leopard those big-assed traffic lights are easy targets. )

Thankfully, my machine is old enough to still use Snow Leopard. You can certainly use Lion I suppose.

Choice? Not much considering only Lion is the alternative to due to the hardware limitations.
