Sun's troubles mean it might be up for sale. It could be a good pickup for Apple, migrating its OS X to larger enterprise systems. It could give Microsoft a stroke.

I can't see Apple doing it. If they bought Sun, they would be forced to maintain a competing OS that's not making a profit. Since I'm pretty sure no company would want to compete against themselves, the only other reason they would buy it is to kill it. But that's counter productive when there's no guarantee that killing Sun would lead to more Apple sales.

Didnt microsoft try to kill off sun at one point? I vaguely remember my CS teacher telling me about that.

Something to do with Java..

Yes, Microsoft tried to destroy Java as a platform neutral programming language. This was all wrapped up in the antitrust suit. Microsoft ended up paying Sun $2 billion to settle a private antitrust lawsuit.

In the irony department: in 1996 Sun was actively considering acquiring Apple.
