My superdrive seems to kind-of, clunk a bit when i burn a dvd (-rw, only disc i have with me at the moment), reading is fine (noisy but no clunks). Just wondering, is clunking normal, I have no idea, what with this being my first laptop, whether this is normal for such a tiny cd drive. I only know that my PCs dvd writers dont make a clunky noise, they are loud, but no clunks.

So in short, any other mbp users got a clunky superdrive whilst burning a dvd (or cd)? Is this normal?

TIA

curiously enough, it toasted that disc.

gave me the following error:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. Error Code 0x80020022

how do i find out what the error code means? is it disc related or otherwise?

Unless something major has changed in the SuperDrive architecture (highly unlikely), then clunking is NOT normal.. And the error you got.. well there's 1 more troubleshooting step to maybe try before calling Apple for warranty work, and that's trying different media. Or, just take it into a Certified Apple Repair center.

I managed to find a DVD+R disc, and that worked okay, took a complete age tho, and raised the temp by 5 degrees C (40-->45!) according to the temperature monitor widget. It then erased my old dvd-rw, which is now a 1.1TB disc according to DiscUtility (who needs blueray!)!!!!

I'll "borrow" one of my housemates cd-r's and see if that clunks too, or if it takes stupidly long!

Looks like i may be returning it due to my numlock led issue anyways, spose this'll give me more backing to get a new mbp, not a repair....but then, can i get it upped to a 17" if i do that....decisions decisions!

Oh yeah, try burning a CD first (both -RW and -R).

dont have a cdrw about.... a cdr will have to do!

CD works, must have been a bum dvd-rw.

Anyway, looks like the mbp's off due to the numlock led :-(
