I just started getting this error during a nightly backup of my external iTunes media drive using super duper. I don't mind redoing the copy from scratch (vs smart copy) but I have no idea if my backup is bad, or the original and i don't want to erase the wrong one. Is there a way to tell if this is a read error on the master, or a write error with the backup?

The last line explains what failed:

| 09:12:54 AM | Error | SDCopy: Error copying /Volumes/Media RAID/iTunes/Mobile Applications/Grubhub 713.3.9.ipa to /Volumes/Media Backup 5TB/iTunes/Mobile Applications/Grubhub 713.3.9.ipa of type 8 due to error 5: Input/output error

You can select to edit SuperDuper copy script to ignore this file or remove the file and replace with a new copy.

Maybe Grubhub 713.3.9.ipa is corrupted? Try copying it off to a flash drive, delete it from the hard drive and see if the backup works.

Update:

I deleted the one file, but the error kept reoccurring with multiple files. I did get a quick response from SuperDuper tech support, they said it was the read drive, vs the backup drive.

I wasn't able to match up the id in the error with the exact drive (it was a 2 drive JBOD software raid created by a previous version of OS X). I have since switched my iTunes library to the backup drive, replaced the few app download/2 movie files that I had added since the last successful backup, and am now running on the single 5tb drive (vs JBOD set before).

My plan is to now replace the RAID with a single WD 8TB drive, backing up the now primary WD 5tb Drive.

(I was happy to see apple is adding the JBOD options back into disk utility for the next version, I was afraid that it would be gone for sure and I would have to get an expensive hardware RAID setup if my library exceeded the maximum hard drive size normally available.)

Next Step is to determine if either firewire drive had a simple file system error, or actual issue that a reformat will not correct. I have already split the drives into 2 again with a quick format. I am now doing a secure erase format, my understanding is that it does two writes to each part of the drive, and if it has a bad block it will let me know during the format.

said it was the read drive

If it's limited to HFS Plus, you might scan with option -s of fsck_hfs(8).

https://developer.apple.com/library...arwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/fsck_hfs.8.html is no longer found, I guess that the manual page will reappear elsewhere. Maybe in the retired documents area.

Retired: Manual page for fsck_hfs(8)

… if it has a bad block it will let me know during the format.

Nope, but if you run HDAT2 (included with Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD)) you might find something in S.M.A.R.T. logs after the event.

If you prefer to see errors as they occur: HDAT2 can do that.

I tried the secure erase format, and it worked fine for the 3tb drive, but failed twice with errors (after a few hours) on the 2 tb drive. I have since replaced the spanned JBOD firewire system with a WD 8tb drive, and repurposed the good drive into a USB 3 case to use with an xbox one.
