SUPER fast battery drain 3GS (less than 3 hours)

I charge my iPhone 3GS overnight every night. Yesterday I get up around 7:00 a.m., check my twitter on twitterfon, check my RSS on NetNewsWire, and do some texting. I go to work. Use the phone for maybe 1 or 2 short phone calls, and a few texts. 10:00 a.m. I pick up my phone to make a call and it is dead. I thought it wierd, so I plugged in the car charger. I couldn't get it to come on. So when I got home I put it on the home (wall charger) and after a couple minutes it came on and showed 60% battery. I let it charge to 100% (which only took about 20 minutes). Took it off the charge and reset the phone. I was hoping it was just a software glitch. A couple hours later the phone was near dead battery again. I called apple and they instructed me to do a restore as new and charge overnight again.

I restored the phone, charged overnight (with a different charger and wall outlet). Today the same thing. So Apple is going to replace the phone.

Just curious if anyone else is seeing this?

I have not dropped my phone or hacked it, it is original iPhone 3GS. The only thing that was different from one day to the next was I installed the update to iTunes that came out a couple days ago and synced my phone after that. No new apps or anything.

Similar Problem

I had the original iPhone for 2 years - I skipped the 3G upgrade last year. I finally upgraded with the 3G S last month. The battery has been very disappointing - without Bluetooth on, push and location service off, I'm getting 3.5 hours on a charge. I may do 60 minutes of calls in that time, and maybe 30 minutes of internet use on the 3G network. But the odd thing that started yesterday is this - I'm using Safari, watching my battery indicator drop to 20%, then 19%, etc., falling quickly. At 7%, I put it aside. I picked it back up an hour later, and my battery indicator was at 35% - very odd. And then it drained quickly. Has anyone else experienced this?

Just an update. I sent my iPhone 3GS into Apple for repair on Friday (July 24th). I am supposed to get my replacement tomorrow. I don't know what happened to it, and they didn't say. Hope this replacement is a good one.

Expected...

Just let the battery drop all the way down to zero a couple times and do full charges, takes awhile for the battery and meter to find itself...

Prob just a bad phone.... The "fix" they suggested fixed mine.
