Aesthetics:
The look and feel of the Super Stump is perfect for using in bed. It is not too heavy, coming in at just under one pound. It is made of a semi-rigid, semi-soft, foam material. It is not too hard making it very comfortable to lay on your chest/stomach while sleeping or sitting in bed, and it is not too soft allowing me to use it on my hard desk without it tipping over or moving around. In fact, I originally wanted to use this stand just for my bed not on my desk (have a Skadoosh stand from Jadoo) and now this Super Stump has already replaced my previous go to desktop stand. The Super Stump is available in black, red, and mint green. I really love the black color while the mint green seems to be more of a feminine color choice. Either way the construction of the Super Stump is very solid and I really don’t see any way that this stand could begin to sag (a huge issue with other bed/couch style iPad stands)
Functionality:
There are three positions one can place their iPad in on the Stump Stand. The first position (slanted ramp position) is great for watching videos and the slightly flatter ramped position (extra notch on the bottom lip of the stand) allows for a slightly different angle which I find perfect for gaming or browsing the web. My favorite position, however, is the raised 90 degree angle horizontal position at the top lip of the stand. I find that I can really only use this position in bed while the iPad is horizontal but that is not an issue as it allows me to do practice questions on my question bank app and watch videos right up close to my face without having to prop myself up in bed. The higher lip really raises the iPad to a perfect eye level when lying flat on your back which is another nice touch. On my desk while reading PDFs and using the iPad Mini as an alarm clock, I find that I can use the upper lip position in both vertical and horizontal orientations.
The Super Stump has some cool features in addition to just serving as a stand. There is a small pocket that you can stuff a stylus or headphones into in the back. The bottom lip also serves as a spot to leave my stylus/pen or iPhone while I am using my iPad Mini.
I was a bit skeptical at first but honestly can safely say that this is by far one of my favorite accessories (and I have spent hundreds of dollars to feed my Apple and Apple accessory addiction). Like most Apple products, it just simply works. As silly as that sounds it is completely true. I use my iPad Mini with a Magpul case and the stand has no problem accommodating the case. I don’t find myself readjusting the iPad Mini while using my stand either, something I would constantly be forced to do with other bed/couch stands. The added ability to use the stand on a desktop surface has allowed me to replace my $80 Skadoosh stand with the Super Stump. I don’t have any neck strain while using the stand and now I pretty confident that I will go back to using my iPad Mini instead of my cumbersome Macbook Air (lol) while I sit in bed.
The Stump Stand is also fantastic as well. It is heavy, does not move, and can be used in both vertical and horizontal positions for both the iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 that I own. I would have to give the edge for the Super Stump as my personal favorite but the Stump Stand is also nice if all you are looking for is a solid, dependable desk top stand. The price of the Super Stump may seem high to some at $40 but when you compare it to some of the junk that is out there selling for $20-50, the Super Stump is really a huge bargain. I don’t ever see myself having to go out and finding a new stand because everything I want the stand to do, it just does perfectly. I wholeheartedly recommend the Super Stump and Stump Stand and if you have any questions please feel free to check out my video review or leave questions for me below.
