I'm seriously considering getting the Samsung Odyssey G9...

1605665346784.png

The res is 5120x1440 @ up to 240Hz.

Does anyone have an M1 Mac and a monitor of that res to test compatibility? I read that it's a 5K resolution. What frame rates can an M1 Mac pump out? (Just using the desktop/apps I mean, I'm not even thinking about gaming with the M1 MBA)

Obviously it's a gaming monitor first and foremost and I'm planning on building a gaming PC early next year, but in the meantime, I'll just be plugging it into my Mac Pro 2009 with RX580, and ideally I'd like to use it with my base MBA too.

Monoprice also sells a version of this same panel at a much lower price (< $900). It has a lower power backlight and 120hz instead of 240. For me that doesn’t matter as I find many HDR monitors too bright:

I bought 3 Monoprice monitors 7 years ago and they all still work perfectly; so they seem to have pretty good quality. Back then they were taking the same panels Apple was using in the 27” iMac and selling a monitor with those in it.

EDIT! Oops, just realize you are not in US...so maybe Monoprice not an option. Sorry about that.

apparently the mini doesn;t like ultra wides. I have the G9 (running opencore) but ordered the Mini m1 which might be going back if it doesn't work out the box!

Been running my ultrawide on my mini for years. Not sure why this would be different....

Is it the same panel? No HDR and half the refresh rate? A fraction of the brightness. Seems like a different panel entirely.

I am looking at this and considering it. Seems a good price/performance ratio. But I woud think it not the same panel as was mentioned.

I believe it supports HDR400. My guess is it is the same panel, but with a cheaper backlight system and simpler controller board.

There are a bunch of reviews on YouTube, just search for Dark Matter 49. They claim the panel is a Samsung LSM490YP02 VA

This is very similar to what they did back when I bought my monitors. Monoprice used the same panels from the iMac (you could even see the cutout for the camera behind the glass...that wasn't there). It's a way to save a lot of money with a reduction in features, but still the great panel quality.

I have been attempting to get a definitive answer on this as I own the Samsung 49" ultra-widescreen monitor and want to get a Mini

Now, I hope I am wrong, but thus far all the preliminary posts on this forum about widescreen monitors are that there are issues with the M1 Mini running these monitors at 5120x1440.

My Intel 16" MBP can run it fine. My Intel 2019 13" MBP can run it, but not in that resolution. The 13" has integrated graphics while the Intel has a Radeon card. Always thought that was the reason.

I would love to see that the M1 Mini can run these monitors but sadly, have yet to see that confirmed.

I'm also thinking about getting this monitor for gaming in windows and would also use it for work on the M1 MBP. Hoping someone can test for us.

Well I have the LG UW49 inch with my brand new MBA M1 (16GB Ram) and it won't run the resolution more than 3840 x 1080...I'm using the USB-C cable that came with the monitor (it's brand new too).

I've tried the option button on "Scale" in Preferences and nothing. That's as far as it goes. :-(

What version is the firmware on the monitor? Samsung has fixed other unrelated problems as of 1008. Maybe it would help. Can you connect with DisplayPort?

I can confirm that MBA M1 cannot run the full native resolution of the 49inch screen via USB 3 cable provided with the monitor. I've tried also in clamshell mode and same result...Shame.

I have a cable coming from Amazon today so will try that once it turns up.
I don't think this is a cable issue. I've tried every approach possible with MBA M1 and the LG super ultrawide...even in clamshell, it won't run at the 5120x1440 resolution whatever I do. :-(

Interestingly, my MBP 13 2016 wouldn't run it either (and the Intel discreet graphics was the culprit according to the forums) but since the 11.0.1 update, it does! Strange the same doesn't apply for MBA M1 after the same update.

If you guys are trying to run that 49" Ultrawide monitor with normal USB-C cable, I can see why it doesn't work.

Is anyone using high-speed TB3 cable to display port cable?

If you have a dock, connect this cable from your M1 to the dock and then from the dock to monitor via display port cable.

If you don't have a dock, then you can try this cable

Not saying that is going to work. I am waiting for my Mini to arrive in two weeks to try it. However, if you are using just regular USB-C cables to try and drive a 49" UltraWide display, chances are, it will fail every time.

Just an unproven suggestion

Just to confirm the Moshi cable does not do anything different to the cable that I am using with the Mac Mini...this one....which is only £18!
