Hi,

I think my Superdrive is not so super and is not working. It can read CD/DVD's but cannot write. I have tried 3 different types of media, lowered the writing speeds and run a lens cleaner through it. Every time I burn I get Hardware Errors and all sorts of non English errors.

I have got Applecare so not really worried but should I take it to the Apple Store where I bought it from or will they just look at it and send it off themselves or will they give me a replacement iMac?

If it does get sent off I want to wipe my machine, just don't the idea of people rummaging through my files. If I do a Time Machine backup and when my iMac comes back can I just do a restore and it will be back as it was?

Thanks

Edit: Its a 24" iMac 3.06Ghz - added my own 2GB to make it 4GB

if you call apple care they are probably going to tell you to take it to an apple store to be checked out. Every time I have called apple care that is what they have told me to do, and they even told me that the closest apple store was only 45 minutes away so that was my best bet. Not sure what they would do if you don't have an apple store near you...

if its a fatal error they will replace you a another mac but normally would repair

and yes if you used a time backup it would just like it was

Typically what Apple does is try to fix it in their store, they will only send it off to Cupertino, CA if there's a MAJOR problem, and if it's something that is just bad, they will replace the whole computer. Otherwise, they won't typically replace the computer unless it's something they are unable to fix. Like a lemon, if you will.

I know with iPods they're quicker to replace the whole system, but not really computers. More expensive, obviously.

I know if it's even a specific part that they need, they will just order it from Cupertino, as opposed to sending it to them.

I think with so many Apple stores throughout the country (and overseas), they will just fix them there.

I guess I'll take it into the store and do a backup before I set off. The only pain is that the store is 60 miles away.

Just spoken to the store and they said they will have a replacement in stock but they can't guarantee how long it will take to fix as they have to diagnose it first. If it is just a superdrive swap they still can't tell me if they will do it whilst I wait.

Well, at least it wouldn't be coming out of your own pocket necessarily. My nearest Apple store is also 60 miles away, but sometimes you just have to suck it up and spend the money on gas and do it!!

Good luck.

I think its safer to take it to the store. If I have to leave it there then they'll courier it to me but there is a chance they will do it there and then and I avoid it having shoved in a van, rattled around abused at the repair centre and then shoved in a van, rattled around and delivered to me 1 week later.

I concur. I took my MBP in to an Apple store when its superdrive died and they replaced it in less than 2 hours. I think you said you did this, but it's definitely a good idea to call them and ask if they have your part in stock to replace. Then you can take it home safely in your own vehicle. If they have to order it, it will obviously take several days. I had them order a fan (different repair) when one died and they called me back when it was in stock so I could bring the computer in at that time to be fixed in store immediately.
