Superdrive, hardly used and broken.

Hi everyone, been a happy imac user since Sept2007, now my dvd drive won't eject the disk. I tried all the method on the net that I could find, stuck it in to a pro, who now tells me I need a new drive@ £140 + £45 for fitting it. (out of warranty) I'm disgusted at the cost for the repair, especially when the drive doesn't get used very often. I've now opted to not get the job done and now looking for an external drive.:mad:

Has anyone else had this experience with their superdrive?

I've never had this problem...


... but I will say one thing. the vast majority of USB2.0 external DVD burners work flawlessly wether the box says they're mac compatible or not. I Have a LG lightscribe DVD+-R/RW/RAM 12x USB2.0 drive i picked off of the shelf at a Tesco (uk), and nowhere on the box or in any of the documentation dose it mention mac, (I think in the docs it even says its incompatable) and everything works, disk burning in finder and iLife apps and iTunes. Toast recognises it and allows the full range of burning.

There are companies that will sell you a mac compatible (written on the box) drive, and charge you more for the privalage of having that text printed on the box. The above burner set me back a hefty £45, as apposed to the £110 ish Laice (spelling?) wanted.

Cheers and thanks for the advice..
But now the engineer that has done something to my imac, there is now 2 vertical lines across my screen. I'm really not a happy bunny, teddy bear is in the corner. So the Computer is back at the engineers, to find out what he has done. My wife isn't going to be happy when she finds out the bad news. :mad:
 
Need an external dvd drive, any ideas?

Got my Imac now, the engineer says it was dust on the cable between logic board and screen. I'll have to believe him, as I've never seen inside this imac. All back to normal, except for the dvd drive. Now in the market for an external drive.
Has to look good and be quiet.( I don't like noise, was using my old pc. It was noisy)
 
Thats too bad, Im buying an iMac soon, i hope I don't run into any issues. Hope everything works out for you :]

I'm sure everything will be fine, I would advise anyone now, to take the extended warranty. It's far too expensive if something goes wrong.
 
Yes any external dvd drive should work. Word of advice, Find one with fire wire.
Check out OWC they have some nice external drives with fire wire. Plus the use Pioneer drives.

I would recommend that any mac owner. Use a external dvd drive. As much as possible. DVD burners do have a tendency to burn out after awhile.
Which are always costly to replace unless you can do it your self.
