I'm running Catalina beta (19A573a) on a new iMac.
A new Superdrive doesn't appear in the Finder window. It also doesn't appear in Disk Utility. If I put a DVD in it it spins around briefly, then is ejected. I would appreciate any advice; thank you in advance.

Insert a blank disk & see if you can write to it. I have had problems "ripping" CD's with my 2017 MBP ince Catalina came out. No response from Apple.

Billgr0248,

Thank you for writing.
A blank CD behaves the same as one with content: the disk spins around for a minute, then is ejected. There is no sign of any activity on they desktop. The Superdrive doesn't appear in a Finder window.
I too got no answer from Apple about this; they said it might be fixed with the Catalina release in early October.

If it doesn't get "fixed",
and
If you still need to access/create DVDs/CDs,
then
buy a "3rd-party" USB DVD/CD (or Bluray/DVD/CD/M-DISC) drive, and use that instead.

Did you try changing the settings in preferences to see if that does anything ?

I just tried ripping a CD and no issues on Beta 9 also tried on earlier betas with no issues - might be something specific to your iMac?

Thank you everyone for replies. I regret that this doesn't seem to be a Preferences problem.
Below is a screenshot of the error message I get. What is the meaning of the DVD Player's region showing up as "-1"? Regions are only listed as positive numbers 1-6. Apple can't tell me.
Thank you in advance for any thoughts.
