I'm probably not the first to have this issue, but I wanted to ask the question anyway, because the community is generally very helpful.

Since a short while ago, my SuperDrive has been acting very oddly. It will read DVDs just fine. But, when I put in a CD (commercial, audio CD), it will make an effort to read it, three times, but then eject it.

It's in a MacBook Core Duo, 2.0Ghz.

Here's the System Profiler info for the SuperDrive:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857:

Firmware Revision: HBE4
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

Also, in my System Preferences, under the CDs and DVDs heading, I can't seem to change any of the options anymore (started happening at the same time as the SuperDrive issue).

This is how it looks at the moment:

I'll select an other option from the drop-down menus, but after I've closed System Preferences it must just jump right back, because the next time I open the CDs and DVDs preferences, it's like this again.

This leads me to think it might be a software issue (wishful thinking, really), but I've started to believe it must be an actual hardware issue with the SuperDrive. Any advice? Should I swallow, take a few breaths and get a replacement SuperDrive (thank goodness for AppleCare coverage)?

If this is a software issue, would it maybe correct itself after buying and installing Leopard? I really want the SuperDrive to work, of course... and I really wouldn't mind having Leopard either. ;)
