Is the superdrive the fastest dvd burning slot loading drive you can get? It's just that coming from a desktop PC background where you can get 18x+ dvd writing 8x speeds seems a bit slow

For which computer? Clearly the notebook and notebook-like ones will be different than the Mac Pros in terms of options.

You could always attach an external burner (either IDE or SATA) to a USB 2.0 or Firewire 400/800 that achieves the 18x burn. I installed an 18x burner in my PowerMac G4 and it burns just fine.

Sorry, I meant for the iMac. It just seems a bit odd that you can have a pretty powerful processor, 4GB RAM, a pretty powerful graphics card but the DVD burner is something you could have bought 3 years ago. Is it just that laptop DVD burners generate too much heat and thats why Apple only use a 8x burner?

AFAIK, there are no faster laptop burners than that. Could be wrong though.

I don't care much though. I rarely burn discs at full speed anyway, there's just too much risk of getting errors.
