Another problem with playlist syncing (iPhone 3G/16GB 2.0.1, latest iTunes on 10.5.4):

As most of you probably do I only sync a selected number of (smart) playlists to my iPhone. This works almost as advertized. However, in addition to the ticked playlists (in the music section) additional smart playlists are synced to the device.

These superfluous playlists are only synced if they happened to contain songs that are present in the selected playlists. It appears that only these songs are synced so no additional files are written to the iPhone, however, they do clutter up the playlist list (no folders, why Apple, why?).

As an example: I have the usual "Played Last" smart playlist showing the last 25 played songs. I do not want this playlist on my iPhone, however, when syncing any music at all via another playlist it appears on the iPhone.

Is this a known behavior? Any workarounds to fix this? Does this even happen to other people?

Cheers,
Dembo

Created an account just to confirm that others have this problem.

It's exactly as you describe it. I have several smart playlists and regular playlists. The superfluous smart playlists are tied to properly synced smart playlists.

This is also with a 16GB iPhone 3G, ver 2.0.1 (5B108) and was a problem before the recent software update as well.

Thanks MrMustard for confirming that I haven't lost my marbles. :D

Anyway, for now it basically forced me to clean up my playlist universe which did grow quite a bit since folders came around...

However, I wish Apple would fix this. Did anybody stumble over a related thread at the Apple support forums? Maybe if we bump it up there they notice it.
