i just read that Apple is dropping the Airport product line. Bad news to me as I have a whole house music system based on Airport and Airport Express.

What other wireless base stations will support AirPlay like the Airport Express?

Or should I just stock up on spares?

Thanks,
Andy

Anything that can parse the airplay protocol and output audio in some form should do it, I guess?

Don't buy the things just yet, though. Airplay2 should be coming soon, and would likely give you better options for multi-room audio from more apple devices...

They will keep supporting Airport for a few years. No need to panic.

As a client, Express can join any Wifi network and will appear as an Airplay destination. Airplay uses Bonjour to advertise availability, and Bonjour is also used for AirPrint, Apple File Sharing etc. Other routers support this as well, just not as an AirPlay destination.

Chances are, Express will work for the next 10+ years as an Airplay device. By then, who knows what kinds of options will come around.

I realize that Apple has said that they will support Airport for at least 5 years, but during that time it may be hard to find Airport Base Stations. To that end I have purchased spares of AP Extereme and AP Express. Now to just wait for the next big thing in whole house music streaming.

Thanks for the replies.
