"Supported Disc Not Available" on DVD player... help?

When I put in any DVD on my macbook pro and open DVD player, nothing happens. But then if I press play, fast forward, menu, or anything to try and get the movie to play it gives the message "Supported Disc Not Available" and then a little circle with a slash through it... anyone know how to fix this or is this something Apple has to do?

Try opening the disc through the File menu. It might be set to read a disc image from your hard drive or something.

I had that problem and found repairing permissions sorted it.
