Hi there,

I´m having an issue to upgrade to Mojave, as you might know, we need to have a video card compatible with metal, currently my mac pro has the following specs:

Modelo: Mac Pro
Identificador de modelo: MacPro5,1
Nome do processador: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Velocidade do processador: 2,26 GHz
Número de processadores: 2
Número total de núcleos: 8
Cache L2 (por núcleo): 256 KB
Cache L3 (por processador): 8 MB
Memória: 32 GB
Versão da ROM de arranque: MP51.0089.B00
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB

by reading this article in apple´s website : https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202239 | They say those are the list of card compatible with mac. i meant to install big sur - is it possible?

Thank you for your support.

Big Sur and Catalina are unsupported on cMP regardless of the card.

To install Catalina or Big Sur , you'll have to (natively) install Mojave first to get the last BootRom version 144.0.0.0 :

For Metal compatible GPUs:

The most common way to install Catalina or Big Sur is OpenCore:

With a dual 4.1 with stock Processors expect Audio stuttering issues.

need to upgrade processors as well.

Hi mac(aco)

Looks like you have MP 4.1 that was flashed to 5.1. As mentioned above from others, you need to do a Firmware upgrade to 144.0o.xxx first. Regarding GPU, in my opinion it would be best to use a RX 580 with 8GB VRAM. It's really a great card. Since you made it so far with a Nvidia GT120, you most likely have no strong need for a stronger card anyways. Look for a Sapphire Pulse model if possible and you will have no problems to run Mojave or Catalina without a problem. However, Big Sur is an entire different animal.
In your case I would check out Mojave first. From Catalina onwards, no older 32Bit software will work anymore. So be aware. I have numerous friends with macs that vomit because of Catalina and all those changes that come with it. Big Sur is even worse. Out of experience with the MP5.1 I do recommend to go to Mojave and stay there as long as possible. Mojave runs best on this machine, which is the only reason why I have not sold it yet. Mojave is just great and very stable.

Hi guys,

Well that is the also my indecision now, currently im using the mac pro for garageband (old version) running on High Sierra and also Teams, Email and works like a charm, however the majority of the programs (Adobe CS5, New version of Garageband and the majority of new programs) don´t run on High Sierra and it´s a pitty, because this mac is still a hell of a machine, really fast and reliable (ok, graphic card sucks) but im getting fed up of "this software is not for you..." ... :)

you still kinda ignore the Audio issues with stock processors from #5

As you use it for garageband you will notice it very soon if upgrading to Mojave or an even newer OS.
