Little update on my surface pro 2.

Well last week I noticed my Surface Pro 2 had suddenly got a few small hairline scratches. I quickly stuck a screen protector on and noticed that my screen protector was also getting scratched.

Turns out it was the surface pen. I rang Microsoft Surface support and they were very helpful and sent me out a replacement pen and told me they would ring me when I have received it to see if it sorted the issue.

So new pen arrives by courier and I put a new fresh screen protector on my device so that I could test it fresh and would instantly notice new scratches. I spent a couple of hours drawing with the new pen and gladly there were no new scratches. Clearly the nib on the original whilst looking ok to the naked eye, had some micro abrasion of some description that caused the hairline scratches.

Microsoft support duly rang me to follow up on the pen and I was happy to tell them that the new pen was grand and wasn't causing scratches and I was happy.

To my surprise, they then said to me they would replace my surface pro 2 unit as clearly the scratches were not my fault - if I wished them to do so. I told them they (the scratches) were not too bad and I could live with them as they were only hairline, but they said that was by the by and would replace it without issue.

Taking them up on the offer, my surface pro 2 is going back on Monday by UPS.

Genuinely impressed by the level of customer service by Microsoft and how polite, helpful they were. It is also good to have regional support and not just some call centre in the east...

That's great service.

How's the Pro 2's stylus compared to the S pen?

Does your unit get pretty hot?

Can you comment how easy or not either excel or word is to use on the Pro 2?

To hold (comfort wise) the surface pen is like a biro pen - the extra girth and length over the S-Pen makes it far more comfortable to hold.

That being said it's not a patch on my Intuos 5 pen.

As for getting hot, yep the surface can get warm when under a lot of stress. General ipad like activities and it remains cool, but illustrating in Photoshop/Painter/Sketch Book Pro and after 30 minutes you will notice the ðevice warming up. Not to the point of discomfort, but very noticeable never the less.

Yep I have office installed and it runs great, it's one of the few windows apps that is optimised for HiDPi displays and therefore can handle the device GUI running at 150 or 200% scale and remain perfectly useable.

I use on screen keyboard when it's on my lap rather than the keyboard cover (I just use that on my desk) and find it no problem using it with office. The only tiny caveat being the onscreen keyboard doesn't always auto pop up or close and you have to manually press the little keyboard icon to get it to do so.

To be honest I've had times of nightmare Apple Support in the past (not for all my hardware over the years but there has been a few times of hair pulling out).

My surface pro 2 is first PC hardware that I've bought in over 20 years - though I am always dealing with windows computers.
