Surge / Electrical protection?

I'd like some advice from someone with electrical knowledge if they're about...

I want to swap out a couple of old power strips and replace with a larger one (6-10 gang) but at the same time provide some protection against power surges and lightning strikes.

What products are recommended and what do they realistically provide? I'm in Britain in case it narrows down the list at all.

(And yes, our house has been hit by lightning once in the past.)

I'd recommend Belkin SurgeMaster products - I have two the same (one for the Mac and peripherals, one for the home theatre set up) and both proved their worth during a recent electrical storm.

yup i am also using belkin, and its been working well so far as well as offering peace of mind.

Yep Belkin have a good name. My only concern was raised when I noticed the protection level was far lower than for more professional products (over £100 for a 6-gang). Inferred that for things like lightning strikes it may be rendered toast along with your gear.
