i just got a set of stereo speakers for the mac book pro, but they have a very annoying hum. im told this is most likely caused by being plugged into the surge protector. i can check this when i get home, but if i find that they hum because of the surge protector, and that i have to plug them into a different socket, is it possible that a surge could come up through the speakers and into the mac book pro via the headphone jack ( audio out) on the MBP?

You probably have a ground loop...

You might try (per Apple):
Reduce the potential difference between currents by plugging the computer and all attached peripherals into outlets which are as close together as possible.
In other words, try plugging in the MBP and speakers into the same power strip... ;)

they are all plugged into the one strip, my surge protector has 4 sockets, and the laptop, external HD and speakes are plugged into this. maby if i try to plug them all in as close together as possible. i was going to return the speakers, but im guessing new speakers wont solve the problem. the problem also happens when im playing the ipod through the speakers and the MBP is switched off. that sounds like its an issue with the speakers does it not?

it was the speakers. tried them in most sockets in my house and still that infrernal tortorous hum! returned them and the technician ( sales guy) said they had a lot of trouble with creative speakers having hum and crackly volume knobs. went for the JBL duet speakers. smaller, less tone control but no hum!!! and they sound great for a set of small speakers. problem solved!
