So I completed the upgrade to 2GB ram and 320GB hdd to my 09 Mac Mini. Everything went perfect, no scratches to the case or underside plastic or anything. But i did forget one little tiny thing and I am wondering how bad it would be if I just left it alone (at least till i get my 4GB kit to upgrade the ram again). After taking out the old hdd I left the little silver pads on the old drive and forgot to move them to the new drive. I know from the OWC video (which is what I followed for this project) those are anti-static pads, but my question is am I totally screwed without them or are they not really necessary?

BTW for those curious I used a pizza cutter and butter knife to open the case since I didn't have a thin enough putty knife.:D

Wow 136 views and not a single answer. Nobody knows whether the little pads on the stock mini hdd are necessary or not?

Would you rather have people just say "I don't know?" and then walk away?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'd say that it would be smart to put the anti-static pads back on. Since those are what protects the computer from static discharges, and since static discharges can fry your computer, if you don't you could potentially kill your computer.

Anti static pads?
I thought they were just for cushioning
Anyway, plenty of computers have hdds without 'anti static pads'
And why would it need anti static when the computer itself is connected to ground and the hdd makes contact with metal inside the computer

first of all i'm glad the surgery was a success. If the computer is running fine right now then, there is no harm without that thing you forgot.

Thanks for the replies all. I pretty much thought I would be ok, but just needed that little extra boost in confidence.
