I must admit I'm surprised at the Pro's high price tag. It doesn't do much different to the 9.7" standard model.

True tone and extra speakers wouldn't cost much to add to a cheaper iPad.

Not everyone needs the pencil either. The screen is bigger but generally not noticeable. It doesn't do much Pro stuff you would expect like a Mac book.

So yes overall I don't see any revolutionary changes over my old Air 2. Perhaps adding 3D Touch and facial recognition and a glass back would make it worth the price tag. No doubt Apple when they do will pitch it at £1000.

But if you just use iPad for browsing the web really anything more than an Air - does the same.

Design wise the IPad 1/2/3/4 are past there sell by date now.

The differences between the models are pretty well established. Just don't buy the Pro if you don't see the value. It is that simple. The standard 2017 iPad is a good alternative, if one doesn't need the features.

@ $329 USD the 2017 non pro iPad is the standard iPad. The iPad Pro isn't marketed or priced for the masses.

Quite a bit bang for the buck with the non pro model, especially when you consider you can almost get 2 of them for the price of one 10.5 pro model. And they both pretty much do the same things if you don't need pencil support.

Its more the cost of the accessories that make my head spin.
The hardware build and OS I'm willing to pay for as they hold up for some time and are still holding up
when I upgrade at which point I hand it down or sell and can get a good return
I think with the pro the apple pencil and the faster changing cable and brick should be part of the deal
and it would make for a more compelling investment.

As far as I can tell Apple hasn't struggled to sell the 10.5" so from a buisness point of view there's no need to include accessories.
I would very much have liked and I did expect the fast charging brick but it didn't stop me buying it without.

Initially I got an iPad 2017 as I noticed the big price difference between that one and the Pro. 4 months later I sold my iPad and got a 10.5 inch Pro and I have to say I am really happy I did this upgrade. The screen on the Pro is so much better than the iPad 2017, plus 4 speakers and a nice student discount at Apple UK made me pull the trigger :). I am only going to upgrade from this one in 3/4 years time so I think the Pro was a good deal.

My exact scenario, right down to student discount (Open University student here). 256GB + keyboard cover + size and quality of screen + iOS11 GM = 2011 MacBook Pro replacement. Was already tempted to upgrade from the 2017 iPad for a while now given how much I was using it in favour of my old MBP. HDR movies and the quality of iOS11 on the regular iPad persuaded me to go for the pro upgrade. No regrets whatsoever so far, performs and meets my needs exactly as envisaged.
